I noticed a few months ago that my 51 plate td5 was leaking oil. It was only a trace and as its from the engine its easy to check the level and moniter how much shes losing. The trouble is its now making a bit of a mess on the drive so its probably time to do something about it. It apears to be coming from the top somewhere close to the oil filter. I think i remember reading something about the rotary filter bolts not being very good?? Am i right in thinking that the rotary filter is near the normal one and how easy is it to get to??
 
I'm beginning to think that an oil leak is compulsory on a LR. Mine leaks all the time from the rocker cover. Everyone I've spoken to about it says "they all do that dont worry" but I do worry and yes it makes a mess on the drive. Mines a 300TDi not a TD5
 
Yeh NORMAL!
I console my self with the fact that with all the oil that leaks and spatters itself over the chasis it wont rust as fast:p
 
Im not really worried about it as i can keep my eye on how much is being lost fairly easily but im getting grief about the oil on the drive and that does bother me!

Would be nice if it was a 30 min job that i could do myself.
 
Well, on a TD5 it is a 5minute job if it is the front camshaft seal. The rear one is a bit hard to get at but possible, and the rocker cover shouldn't take even a novice more than an hour. The only other leaks I know of are the turbo feed pipe which has a copper washer, also easy to change, and sometimes the seal on the centrifugal filter is not too good. All are easy, quick jobs.

The sump is more difficult but TD5 sumps don't seem to leak very often (unlike the 300tdi).
 
I know what you mean about the drive!! Not a problem for us as we have gravel but well embarrassing when you leak on friends nice new paved one:eek:

On the 300tdi the engine breather can also leak cos of knackered O ring where it goes in head.
 
Well I'm starting with rocker gasket, just got one from difflock for £4 but aint fitted it yet.
 
It turned out to be the normal oil filter that was not sealed properly.
Anyone know the best way to remove oil from paving slabs?
 
Petrol or something like that mite work for small spots however go to your local screwfix and get detergent (see below) and pressure wash if you have one, works a treat.

I went to fill my gearbox last summer and it was definatly not needing filled, it was already overfilled and about 1/2 a cup poured out over my neighbours paved car bay before I got the plug back in. Swarfega did a good job.
