So little over a year ago I bought my first discovery, it was a mess but it was cheap and the guy motd it for me and with that I began land rover ownership :rolleyes:
so after many running repairs, servicing, green laning etc mot time comes round and considering it had been breakdown free I was optimistic:( it failed on rot and not just a little rot, so much so it likely shouldn't have passed its previous 2 Mots never mind the one I operated it with, so despite its relatively good year of use I made the call to abandon it :mad:
So, I needed a new car but felt like I wasn't done with discoveries so after many hours and hours looking I got in touch with a dude in Widnes, I went with a torch and a years worth of ownership knowledge and looked and looked and looked all around it thoroughly, the few things I found didn't fully put me off but the mistake I did make was I had no back up plan, and I didn't realise until I was looking around it that if I walked away I would be without car so I had to make the call and deal and drive home....
Now don't get me wrong, I love the way it looks and the interior is the best one and is in great condition, it drove nice on the test and on the way home, success :D:D

So collected it Saturday morning and Saturday evening I take the wife, two kids and the puppy out to grandmas, now if anyone on here is familiar with Telford they will know there is speed bumps everywhere and fully loaded there is a knock on the back, no problem I knew a drop link was broke it'll be that.....
Sunday morning I head out to play with my new purchase as you do....
I'll put it in a list rather than a paragraph but suffice to say no matter how much I looked the day before it wasn't enough :(:(
No washer bottle,
No antifreeze,
Oil level too high
Old oil filter,
Dent on the roof,
Poorly trimmed bumper and trims to accommodate the wheels,
OS rear damper rubbing on the inner arch....
Hang on, that shouldn't be like that even an aftermarket damper wouldn't rub, I get on my back and immediately get a kick in the balls, the shock mount had snapped off :(
Gutted yes but a bit of research and interneting and I find you can buy a new replacement mount....

Your repair looks decent but ffs you've had a D1 you should know about rust, did you not check
the fluids when you viewed it. The joys of landy ownership :D
 
So did the mount repair Saturday and Sunday I set about finding a cause of 'loads of boost when cold but dull when warm'....
The guy told me that it's remapped but then he also told me he'd done the oil and filter, there was zero rot and it was a Bluetooth stereo.....
First stop i pull out the ECU to check for oil, yep you guessed it it was swimming...

And not only that attached to the ECU was a little orange boost box :rolleyes:

Moving on, I head round to the turbo to check wastegate actuator and see the plunger is bent.... So now I'm back to my other discovery and I proceed to swap actuators and soon find the actual wastegate arm is siezed in the turbine housing.... So replacement fitted, arm freed I move onto the maf I pull the pipe remove air filter cover and what do you know, no air filter and maf is caked in crap.....:mad::mad: It's better but it ain't there yet and I'll be doing injector seals this Saturday so I'm reluctant to push too much yet.
I get to work this morning and I get out and there is a fishy smell, I'd of noticed the clutch slipping and I don't know why but I went straight to the is rear wheel, touch the wheel and it's hot, sticking rear caliper :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

While I'm more than capable of doing the work I would have rather known about it's faults first rather than finding them as I go but too late now I'm committed, literally :rolleyes: and now we are all caught up and I'll hopefully continue to update this thread with any more good or bad findings as I go and now I'm calling it a night C

It's funny I popped the bonnet straight away and went to the coolant res and he'd just got back with it so it spewed hot water and I quickly put the cap back on and carried on looking, I'm buggered if I know why I didn't pull the dipstick while I was there, because I'm an idiot is the most likely reason :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Tis always good to take along another landy lad with you, I went with mate who was determined to buy
a black td5 black leather nice outside gleaming paint ect fk me I put my hands through the inner wings
both sides & the rear chassis was hanging off & still he wanted to pay 2k for it. :mad: I told him if he bought
it he was on his own I wasnt repairing it & I will tell everyone that I told you not to buy it and my name
wasnt on it. :D He backed off but bought another in the much the same condition. (no he didnt take me):rolleyes:

I feel your pain mate, just had a similar experience when I bought my 2002 Disco TD5. The worst is...I had to do the buying remotely on the phone with just requested and sent photos from the guy selling it. I live all the way up on one of the remote northern Orkney islands, the guy even offered to drive it up to Aberdeen from the central belt and shove it on a ferry for me which saved me a 3 day trip...which was nice.

However, the first signs of trouble was when I jumped in to drive it off the Ferry at Kirkwall...there was a strange switch dangling from a couple of red wires underneath the steering column. I had next to no brakes as the pedal was solid...couldn't see at pitch black of night in gale force winds sat on the pier so I drove it down to the north isles ferry port to await the local ferry in the morning.

Getting it home the next day, I investigated the strange red wires with the switch. Turns out it was a homemade bypass for a dodgy lighting stalk, it turned the dash lights and rear running lights on. On checking the obvious vacuum leak on the braking system, I discovered he had broken the little spigot off the bottom of the non return valve on the servo and slapped it back on with gaffer tape...I did a bodge repair on it with a bit of 7mm copper brake pipe and some instant gasket to tide me over until the replacement vacuum pipe and non return valve get here.

Looking round the D2 I noticed that the facelift headlights were only held on by the top bolts, he'd half fitted (and wrongly wired) a pair of facelift headlights in an attempt at a conversion...thanks to this forum, they're now wired up properly but still need a bit of fettling to attach them so they're not rattling about. Other things include wrecked and paper thin rear disks with metal to metal pads, a poorly fitted and home made EGR delete kit made out of a bit of thin tin tube with a bracket soldered onto it to fit the inlet manifold...I won't even describe the EGR cooler and Exhaust manifold blanking plates...luckily enough I have a TD5 EGR delete kit I bought for one of my old Defenders sitting in the garage There's also a burnt out rear wiper motor to replace, front wipers that won't park (wiper stalk I think) to keep me going.

The chassis however 'looks' fine...all undersealed with a patch here and there and a quick hammer test of the main bits only turned up a corroded NS front wheel arch...for the moment. Doesn't seem to be any of the main culprit bearings, bushes or gaiters gone and the engine and gearbox (apart from a seized hi-lo ratio lever) seem pretty good, no rattles, leaks, clangs or bangs of anything digesting itself in there so I might have lucked out on that side.

I also lucked out speaking to one of the other farmers from the north end of the island who just happened to have a 52 plate facelift TD5 sitting in his field, the chassis is rotten through but it still runs pretty well (his wife used it to take hay out to her horses)... so I paid him 50 quid for it to save him the 100 quid fee charged by the local haulier to uplift unwanted scrap cars and shook his hand before he realised why I was smiling. The almost new general grabber tyres and 16" original wheels are worth just a tad more than that on their own.

I've also now become best mates with a couple of t'interweb's better known landy bits floggers...new and old. We'll see how fettling this thing back to kinda fixed from kinda broken goes over the next week or so. :rolleyes:

But why be afraid? It's already been done and we will most of us recognise the jobs.
I did the ehxaust manifold one myself and it was a bit of a bitch to say the least. ;)

Just checked when he bought it, this IS the history it came with, at least I think it must be.
Maybe he'll clarify, but if so it would make sense that it is Good news.

I'm not afraid in the slightest...but my wallet remains utterly terrified :D

I've only started poring over my Disco...finding strange nests of anonymous purple wire and random dangly fuses here and there which is worrying. I don't mind the mechanical stuff in the slightest...sparky stuff? I'd rather shove live wasps in an orifice.

Up until, the TD5 I too was not too worried about the electrix, but now it is Electronix, not so much....
But have a Foxwell and it certainy helps along with the help from on here, which is invaluable!:):):)
 
My reversing lights refuse to work...checked the fuse but no joy there since it shares with the brake lights. All the rest of the rear lights work after changing some bulbs...so it's either the reverse switch on the gearbox or something in between...hoping it's the switch, even though it's a pain to get to

Do double check the earth, even though it does look like it must be OK.
