Well technically all guesses are correct, I took the gaiter off and it's not the type of lever that will push to the side for diff lock
Not only that I don't think it's even an original LR sticker, my other is literally a sticker but this is a raised flexible plastic thing ...
Mine is a 2000MY Disco2 TD5 and I occasionally get the urge to make a home made mech to action the difflock. But TBH I don't often get into a situation where I might need it. I have yet to really test traction control. But with my Disco 1 300tdi I did once get into a situation where even with diff lock I was stuck.
Not even off road. On a (big) piece of grass (VERY wet!) in front of a mate's house. Fortunately he too had a Landy, with a winch, but even then he had to secure the back of his to a tree to be able to pull me and help me out! Good thing he wasn't bothered about the ruts I left behind!

I stand corrected, I just went to look at my silver one and it's the same flexible plastic and the lever is different too so more investigation needed....
And looking at the silver one I also now realise that someone hasn't bothered with the sound deadening when they have been at, I guess, the gear stick plate

They took the centre diff lock levers off the D2's when they introduced ATC...they'd both end up fighting with eachother in the end. A proper hi/lo/diff-lock lever from a 300 tdi with the linkage intact and you should be able to enable the diff lock on a D2, the gearbox mounts and fittings are still there on the earlier ones...but it would still end up at cross purposes with the ATC. Serious off roaders or purists usually go in for that sort of thing, it's a fairly easy conversion unless you want to go disabling the ATC to make it work properly... but for average green laning and scuffing about over fields...the ATC does just fine :)

Disagree somewhat.
Can’t type all the blurb.
But they certainly won’t fight against each other they both have pros & cons.

It’s a totally different subject and spoke about often, not gonna get into it:).

Yeah, it was only my rough understanding of what they both do and making assumptions based on that...complicated stuff...a bit like understanding epicyclic gearboxes :D

I have heard that if you have a diff lock and TC then it is better if you put the diff lock on before starting the car, somehow suits the computer stuff better.
But this is hearsay now!;)
There's always 2 or more trains of thought on the diff lock thing...my own is that Land Rover took away the diff lock lever after they introduced ATC for a reason, otherwise they'd just have left the diff lock option on the hi/lo transfer lever as it was instead of effectively disabling the function and fitting a whole new transfer lever and linkage in the cab... I'm kinda old school in that I'd prefer the diff lock option...but ATC does it's job well enough for the average Disco driver, I'm not likely to go diving into bomb holes on Salisbury plain for fun (did enough of that in a Chieftain tank)...and my own fields that I wander across to check on my cows aren't that terrible a terrain I'd need a lift kit or a diff lock...if I do, I've got the company cars to go do the farmer stuff in.

I can see your argument, but then why did LR decide to bring the DL back on late model D2s as an option? If they really thought TC was the be all and end all they would have stuck to their guns wouldn't they?
Well no they wouldn't, it was a response to customer feedback. Which just shows the customer is always right even when he/she isn't!
Maybe they tweaked he TCUs on those ones to cope!!
I dunno!

Mine is a 53 and I had a good look around it, I saw the transfer box lever and it was only when looking at the orignal invoice I found they were optional.

CDL and TC = more or less unstoppable

Another day on it...
got all rear lights working,
headlight out and clean,
Found some strange wire on a bar,
Found a snapped torx head on the steering box,
Adjusted the steering box,
Fitted egr delete,
2 rear drop links,
found half the rear door missing,
Discovered a leak onto the parcel shelf,
Tyre pressures,
Got it dirty....

Another day another discovery discovery....
Decided to remove the boost box as I'm convinced it was over fueling, Hmmm I wonder what it looks like inside....

And I'd also noticed excessive movement in the turbo shaft and horrific oil in the inlet so decided to swap turbos with my 'spare discovery'....

You know when people get banned from keeping animals due to abuse, I now think that the same should happen to people that can't maintain vehicles properly :confused:

That has been eaten ... by the faerie folk that live in Landies ...

Don't forget to prime the turbo with oil.
I know it isn't in the Haynes.......;)

So I fired it up after the work and it fired the quickest it has fired yet and the exhaust fumes smell a lot better, it did however have a mass of black soot when revved  no kinda diesel knock but then it only does it when up to temp so I'll listen out for that tomorrow, I will just admit that I didn't examine the injectors for annomalies last week when I did the seals so maybe one of them is jiggered but I got given a Hawkeye last week so I might be able to 'live data' with it....
Oh and the flexy on the downpipe is fubar'd too and has covered the whole side of the engine in soot so I'll put that on next week's list along with rear calipers and clutch cylinders
Land rovers, yeah, get some :D
