Ramp helps massively and to be honest the transmission isn't as complicated as i would have thought but i did have RRPhil (Bemble) on tap at the time and he is probably the country's most experienced person on the ZF range rover box.

The problem with buying a second hand box is you don't know if its as nearly as bad as yours.

There is a write up from Phil around that shows how to strip the ZF5HP24 which we followed and apart from a few special tools we made up quite easily it's not that bad to strip down completely. The valve block is the main unknown and i sent that to Phil and he stripped it and tested it just for fun !
All the parts down to the smallest pin are available.

We made up a large clean bench and just laid the parts out in a line as they came out and then stripped and rebuilt each lump. it comes apart in large clutch packs

This is pretty much all that is in it from memory

we made these tools to compress the clutch springs

and i was particularly proud of our homemade bench press circa 1782..

Right car wouldn't start due to a flat battery . Put a difrent battery on and it started but it's running very ruff and it said air suspension inactive and had warning lights on the dash . Still won't drive either

have to reset the steering angle sensor to clear warnings.....

turn steering wheel full lock left then full lock right and back to centre

Enjoy, i had a google but couldn't find anything matching all your symptoms, the only person i know that knows these inside out is Bemble (RRPhil) and i haven't seen him on here for a while.
Keep us posted as to how you get on. good luck

Cheers. I've spent hours and hours searching but haven't found any one else with the same problem

Not sure whether a more range rover specific diagnostic kit like the allcomms would give you more of an idea, i did google your fault codes which brought back a few ideas.
it could be that your transmission is mechanically shot which i slightly understand and have one experience of but it could also be the valve body or the ECU i guess but i think with the fault codes you have it sounds more internal mechanical failure to me.

can you get the box out and apart ?

There are places on ebay that will do a service exchange transmission but whether they are just boxes that have been taken out of an old vehicle or ones that have been refurbished is anyone's guess.

The torque converter is a must whatever happens which can be refurbished at sussex autoparts or JPAT and they both sell the service / seals kits for the transmission along with the individual spares like the common bearing that fails causing one of the seals to die.

You could drain the oil and take off the sump and filter and see whats going on in there, if its black and burnt smelling then it's a good indicator that the transmission needs to come apart. you could always try a PM to Bemble, he may still be picking up messages.

Bemble/RRPHIL usual disables his PM's on forums cos he gets hounded so much.....

The price of being a genius I guess....

Going to get it on a ramp in 2 weeks and swap the box. Dose the new box have to be reprogrammed or anything. ? Is there any thing else I need to look out for. ?
Thanks

Not sure if the transmission ECU will need to learn the valve block, do you have access to any diagnostics like allcomms if you need to clear any faults?

A common fail for these is the torque converter so if you have the box out you should change this for a recon one or new one as this could be your problem anyway. i only know of JPAT and sussex autoparts that can successfully recon this TC.

Also if its an old box i would at least do an oil and filter change using a genuine OEM type filter and gasket and you must use the correct oil, see RRPhil's post on the link below. this will give you some idea of the condition of the replacement box unless it has already been 'refurbed'

You could also check the pipes to the cooler stat are clear.

Saint has more knowledge than me so hopefully he is about.

l322 V8 transmission oil types - Esso Lt 71141 equivalent?

Only scanner I have access to is the snap on one in the pics . Box I'm getting has done 80.000 and was refurbished at 60.000 . The box I've got had a new tc a couple of years ago . Will be changing oil and filter

It's not a bad job with a ramp and get a copy of Rave repair manual if you haven't already unless you are getting a garage to do it for you and as long as you are confident the new box and TC are good you should be away.
Let us know how you get on

I have a reconditioned gearbox inc Torque Converter for sale. Came off my 2004 RR L322 4.4. Make me a offer and take it. Breaking the whole car for spares.

Good for you, cheers for letting us know, just think how much that would have cost at a transmission specialist or a main dealer

Save my self a good 1500 quid :)

I think it's the only way you will survive owning an L322.

I was at the main dealer very soon after i bought mine as it was the only way at the time to sort the immobiliser programming and there was a woman there who had paid about £8k for an L322 from a private seller. They told her she needed a new box amongst other things and i think their total bill was around £6k to put her car right and the poor lady was in tears. it probably needed less work than mine did and i only spent about , hang on let me add it up, well about £5950........damn it.....:D

Hello Holliday Chicken,
How difficult was it to remove gearbox on your car and how difficult is it to rebuild your gearbox. My box is rumbling between 30/40mpg a slow rumble, but I drove from midlands to Yarmouth and back without any problems, just annoying.
