Hi all, back from a year or so of non LR ownership. Had a D1, parked it up due to rust, bought a D2, circumstances changed and needed something to suit a long tedious commute so sold both. Here we are I guess 15 months later and another change of circumstances has left me wondering if I can wedge an LR back into my life.

My thoughts are the 4.4 NA V8 to remove some of the complexity but what I can’t find is the pros and cons of the bmw and jag era cars. Ideally I’d look for a 4 or 5k early bmw engined car leaving plenty for a diagnostics machine, any unexpected bills and hopefully at some point some off road tyres so I can get back to enjoying the laning community.

Main draw is the L322 is they appear rather plush, rate ok in crash tests and appear better value for money than D3 V8’s.

The jag v8 is the 1 to go for. Iv got the BMW m62tu engine in mine which is good but not as good as the jag lump. Timing chain guides, banks, oil leaks all plague the m62 lump not so the jag.
Bit of Google will inform you on the pros n cons

Thanks, I’m normally fairly good at finding this sort of thing but on this occasion apparently not!

I suppose the other question is whether the early SC cars are worth looking at but an NA car does appeal more just for the fact there’s very slightly less to go wrong.

The Jag engine is superior to the M62 lump the S/C cars are nice, and are generally no more trouble than the N/A and fuel economy is about the same unless you hoon it..

Jag also has the better ZF6 tranny which is a far cry better than the 5hp in the early L322.

Perhaps looking at their values the S/C is what I should be looking at in that case, thanks. MPG isn’t a huge concern, I’ll have a 9 mile each way commute when I’m back in the office compared to my previous 22, we have another car for other duties so I can pick and choose how many miles it will do.

From what I can see all the S/C cars have Brembo’s, I’d like to pop some 18’s and Kumho MT51 265/60/18’s on it at some point so if I can find one a Jag N/A 4.4 is probably what I’m going to be looking for.

I did read somewhere that early cars were better off road than later, is that true? It won’t be seeing any major action but I’d like to be able to do the things I did with my D2.

sorry....it really does not matter.
buy on condition and service history.
any can be great or complete crap and financial disaster...
best of luck.

I plan on going into it with my eyes wide open and a decent back up fund. The other option is a D3 V8 but they are rare and much more money.

L322 is a step above the D3 as you'd imagine.

The SC does have better Brembo brakes.

Nowt wrong with the N/A 4.4 Jag

Seems the terrafirma steels may fit the SC, would be handy as there are many more of those around.

Invest in a battery charger, if you haven't got one!
@kermit_rr
1 invest in a battery charger,
2 be on first name terms with bank manager,
3 have the samaritans phone number on speed dial,
4 have big crate of beer ready,
5 have plenty of aspirin in stock,
6 have divorce papers ready,
7 have some where else to stay
8 and have a back up car

I do have one, I had also been wondering about a solar charger of some description, along with a new battery at the time of purchase.

My routes back into LR ownership are limited. Older ones are off the cards on low NCAP grounds, so it’s D3, sell some organs for a D4, one of the smaller ones or an L322. I don’t fancy the TDV6 for obvious reasons, diesels and turbo/high pressure pump etc bills put me off the TDV8. Advice seems to be the Jag engines are the ones to aim for so a 4.4 D3 which is rare and relatively expensive or an L322 seem to be my options.

Everything I have read indicates that 2007 to 2009 are the best years for the L322. I have a 2008 SC and the only problems I have had are a leaking 4- way hose, $180, and an AC compressor, $350, Replaced both myself. It is a pleasure to drive. Just watched a review of the new Defender on Harry's Garage and he points out it has proper off-road tires on 20 inch wheels so you could probably get offload tires for an SC.

Interesting thanks. To be honest was looking at 2006 only as they have a manual handbrake so one less complication, know the D3 ones can be problematic.

People have reported problems with the electronic handbrake but don't think that should turn you off. The 2006 is said to be a combination of BMW and Ford parts so a little more complicated to work on. Have not read anything particularly bad about them though.

Cost to buy and road tax comes into it, I think a pre 2006 tax hike 4.2 SC / 4.4 NA Jag engined car is going to be my narrow window.

I could go newer but I’m conscious of not going all out then not being able to fix it should it bite me. If I keep well within my means I will be prepared if it does.

edited for accuracy. ;)
