Halfords Advice Centre | Daytime Running Lights UK Law & Regulations

Use of other lamps during the daytime.
Drivers of vehicles that are not fitted with DRL are not required to turn on their
headlamps or position lamps during the day unless visibility is very poor.
However some European member states do require some form of lighting
during the day so if you travel abroad and do not have DRL fitted you may be
obliged to drive with your headlamps on.

Good God!

Halfrauds have got it right - for once!

But I would add that several non-member states require lights too.

....or how about we turn the stereo down (remove headphones), put the mobile and coffee down and look where we are FOOKING going!!!!:crazy_driver:

on the spot!!! the best up-grade on many cars would be changing it's driver

Indeed. Well my conclusion, I will as always switch lights on in low light conditions caused by bad weather or the Earth's rotation rendering it to be getting dark. As for driving around in broad daylight, especially during the summer, it aint happening. That was fun!

Right - how do front facing DRL's stop cyclists and pedestrians, (when running) from colliding with the backs of our motors?:)

Slap a couple of handfulls of butter on the spare wheel then they slide off !!

Indeed! We live in a society where rather than enforce existing laws we have measures heaped upon us, that cost us money directly in addition to taxes.
So, you will pay to make yourself more visible - so the driver on phone, checking out sat nav or entertainment centre, or whatever can see you, or pedestrian not paying attention, or cyclist with headphones and music distraction can see you. More rules do not make us safer, when existing rules are either not enforced or by there flawed thinking, are unenforceable!

Sorry OP, Back to LED side lights:):)

Well, until they make DRLs or dipped beams compulsory in the UK, I'll continue using my cheapy LEDs during daytime- they're like a halfway stage between sidelights and DRLs.

I don't want to needlessly run my Osram Nightbreakers.

Of course if it's foggy etc I'll use more powerful lights.

In some countries the Police are graduates of the 'Chief Wiggam' Police Academy. They jump out of bushes or from behind parked cars waving an over-sized red lollipop type miniature stop sign. They point to your lights and say '€20'

If you have 'foreign' plates don't bother argueing. Just offer them half what the 'fine' is supposed to be and tell them you dont want a receipt. Then they are straight off to a roadside bar for a pizza and a beer.

I know - I've both been caught out and sat in the bar watching them catch the next innocent.

By some strange coincidence a pizza for two with a glass of beer each was ...... €10

They wont make dipped beam during daytime compulsory in the UK. Its a type approval thing, so new vehicles will be built with DRL. Our FL's don't need to be fitted with them and we are not compelled to drive about with our lights on - at least in this respect, some common sense has been used!

I see some of the led's say Canbus ready - no error, I assume that it doesn't matter if you fit these to a car that hasn't got Canbus?

Not really read up on Canbus but don't think my series one has it...or am I wrong? Did a quick search and from what I can see it's Freelander 2's, Rangerovers etc that have it.

AFAIK canbus doesn't affect the FL1 at all.

The sidelights are capless fitting - so if the thing doesn't light up all you do is turn it 180degrees and refit.

No 'bulb failure' warning lights on FL1s.

Hello all and thanks for your input , i think the led sidelight is a march on in tec , it brings our aging freelander 1 s up to a 2013 look  as for DRLs , watching top gear tonight (sun) they where in las vegas , driving with lights on in daylight , with other road users , is it a sign of things to come :D:D

Just a quick update , been out and about this weekend , and while driving in poor daylight conditions rain , mist etc, where i would normally have used dipped headlights , i was more than happy to just use my new side lights , a traffic patrol car also passed me and carried on , so i am very pleased with the improvement :)

believe me they will nick you for not using dipped head lights when either it is dark or visability is less (old money) 100 yards that includes snow , rain , they can also nick you for using fog lights when there is no fog, or the visibility is not less than 100 yards now it might be around 100 meters now but i still use Feet and inches so forgive me , i got a good telling of many many years ago about 1975 when i had done up a cortina and put orange lights on the front they told me they have to be same colour as the headlight , i wish they would pull up some of those trucks with all colour light on.

They don't seem to nick anyone around my neck of the woods, as I see the same old vehicles day after day, week after week with lights missing altogether, some with both side and head out on the same side, and when both out on the off side it's really dangerous for oncoming vehicles. They really **** me off when it's so easy to change a bulb. Just **** poor vehicle maintenance from **** poor drivers imho.
Oh and by the way, I had the same result as Singvogel said earlier, as in the led side lights fell to pieces after less than 6 months.

I'd recommend people check their sidelight bulbs once in a while too, they seem to discolour the glass after a while to the colour of dark sunglasses!!!

Same here , and agree , on the subject of LEDs falling apart  i was concerned when i read sings reply , however been back on the site that supplied mine and read the spec again , full 12 month warranty , immediate response on/off , 50,000 hour bulb life , 30 lumens , vibration resistant , mind you does not say heat proof :D only time will tell ;)

Getting ****ed off with these LED sidelamps. it's already the 3rd pair in a matter of 6-8 months. I've seen it twinkle thought maybe i had some bad connection in master connector. now it's blown. I like the white light but it's freaking me off now :S anybody had same problem or similar?

They look powerful too! Thanks mate i'll give them the last try and see what happens. Much appreciated!
