They make you much more visible if there is bright sun low on the horizon behind you. You might not need them... but is certainly helps oncoming traffic!

I think that driving around with any kind of lights on in broad day light is ridiculous!!

I agree with you, but still Beneagles reasoning makes sense. I like a little (moderate) bling and was looking for some DRL which i could fit in the Blank Parts of my facelift's grille. i've seen some cars over here with an led strip below or over the headlights which creates the VW effect but i do not personally like the many curves etc

Mate, if you are driving around in broad day light with lights on for cosmetic reasons, that is even more ridiculous!!

I get it with motorcycles but cars na. If you cant see me coming you shouldn't be on the road. How about a 3 mph speed limit and a chap with a red flag walkin ahead - its bollocks!!

HAHA! I've seen some lightbars on another thread which would make a good one so as to be seen :p

That is why i just don't get it! to me it's all cosmetic i won't get them fixed until it's by law...and enforced. But i hear it's an EU thing. Maybe it's just a rumour car accessory shops spread to increase sales

Yes, that's its, a conspiracy between over paid Eurocrats and Halfords!!:D

I noticed during the recent snowy period that snow builds up on headlights these days, reducing the output considerably

good point .. :)
noticed that as well .. 'n used dipped beams whereas i might have normaly just used the sidelights .. simply to keep the lens clear of snow 'n ice

and for some reason .. with snow laden country scenery .. even on a sunny day ..
some cars colours appear to meld with the surroundings .. 'n not just white ones either

fekn arseholes. Well I'd rather fit a pair of them 100watters and watch other blink their eyeballs out :D

I regularly visit countries where the traffic laws say you must have either DRLs or dipped beam on all the time even in towns.

Is that Euro nonsense coming to us SV?

I'm no longer sure what we (UK) have opted in or out of. We have lots of exemptions some of which are long term and others coming in a little later thean the rest of the EU. Tachos in mini-busses for example. And the DIY trailer rules.

BMW, Audi, and M-Benz have fitted DRLs for years and if you wanted to, you could de-select it by using an i-Drive menu, T4 or similar.

On the latest models since DRLs became compulsory to have fitted they can't be turned off I believe.

Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia all demand dipped beam if you don't have DRLs so everyone has lights - no one is running without and Police checks are in evidence.

In southern Germany and Austria almost everyone runs with lights.

Northern Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, and France are a bit like here in UK - some folks do, some folks don't.

I reckon it'll eventually be compulsory here too.

Tx for insights SV. It will probably happen here then! We have become a nation of sheep. The day will come when your speed and direction will be controlled and monitored by computer, by authorities - all these cameras everywhere are the thin end of the wedge - mark my words:(

Ha, its not that - its just bollocks and there's more and more of this. Best I don't get started:)

I'll try and remember that the next time I get called to clear up after an accident caused by sun-blindness.

Is that an official reason or a version of careless driving? - anyhow we are not going to agree on this one:)

I agree , drls or marker lights , do improve safety on our crowded roads , if it helps stoping another vehicle or pedestrian , pulling out/ walking in front of you then all well and good , I check that all my lights are working quite often , unlike some , in 10 minites the other night i counted 9 cars running with just 1 headlight  my other bugbear is cyclists with on lights at all

Why don't they make it compulsory to have a flashing amber light on the roof of all vehicles and be done with it

I only have standard bulbs in mine not even night-breakers,
so nice and yellow white light..
but at this time of year I quite often put dips on,
lets be honest it is not like running the old dynamo system,
even with the short journeys I do its doesn't harm anything..

And if it makes me easier to see then I think its a good thing..

What about side on?? how about flashing marker lights all around the mid line of the vehicle (like rope light, with sound to light hooked up to the stereo)? Always on, even when parked, so pedestrians don't walk into it. And previous posters suggestion about flashing amber on roof and an audible alert - I'm here, I'm here!!!!!
....or how about we turn the stereo down (remove headphones), put the mobile and coffee down and look where we are FOOKING going!!!!:crazy_driver:

Halfords Advice Centre | Daytime Running Lights UK Law & Regulations

Use of other lamps during the daytime.
Drivers of vehicles that are not fitted with DRL are not required to turn on their
headlamps or position lamps during the day unless visibility is very poor.
However some European member states do require some form of lighting
during the day so if you travel abroad and do not have DRL fitted you may be
obliged to drive with your headlamps on.
