Hi all, just bought my discovery and went and collected it today from london, was a 220 mile journey home to devon and it wasnt without trouble :(.

Firstly the disco sounds like it has tappet noise, increases with revs, and what with the stainless exhaust it sounds like a tank.:jaw:

Second it started to get hot, until i discovered the switch for the fan, someone had rewired it for manual use, but even with the fan running after this it still had a few warm moments, could this be air locks??

Do all discos wallow when driving?
Im not used to driving a disco.

There will be more :)
 
yes, they all wallow when compared to normal cars.
yes, you could have a few air locks, not difficult to deal with, just a bit fiddley
difficult to say without hearing it.

Its a 1996 disco 2.5 es, looks to be nice under the hood, clean and had money spent on it. but i have noticed some oil from near the oil filter after i have got home...

The ticking noise is loud near the exhaust and fairly noisy under the bonnet, i will try to get a video of it running tomorrow with the noise.
I did notice under breaking small amount of water coming from the front of the boneet and then splashing up the drivers side of the windscreen when pulling away, weird.
 
Have been out and had a look at the brake vacuum pump, its a britpart one i believe.
Are these any good?
My suspicion is that this is the culprit for the tapping noise, i have also noticed the egr has been removed, were would the brake vacuum pipe be that needed to be block up be in the engine bay??
 
You may have to think about replacing the ****part as no dought it will fail soon and it would not surprise me if it has.

I would look for rust to be honest at that age

You have a LOT of forum work to do, followed by probably a fair amount of mechanical work to do!

EGR delete is a good thing, tapping noise will be easy whether it is exhaust, vac pump or even tappets (easy to adjust)

not sure about that vacuum pipe, mine's a v8.

see if yours has got anti roll bars fitted, they do help a lot for on road but should be removed off road.

need to check out the cooling system, make sure its bled up properly and not having issues, otherwise could simply be bad head gasket, water pump or thermostat, ****ed radiator even?

good luck, if you like spanners you'll love a landy cos theyre easy and cheap to repair, of which you will be doing many :)

I took a long look over the disco and inspected the underneath and the common rust points as described on this forum, and the rear door arches have been done and all the underneath is in good rust free condition, rear boot is in good condition too.

It is fitted with springs all round and has britpart shocks on the rear, the rear springs are yellow and seem to have lifted the rear 2".
How can i tell if the brake vacuum pump is buggered??

It does have a stainless exhaust on, does that effect the engine much? not hugely keen on the sound at the moment, but that may be because of the tapping noise...

Aiming to get the engine running nice then tackle the broken and missing parts one by one.
 
Having got under the car, i can see oil coming from the gasket between the vacuum pump and the engine block.
Im going to take the vacuum pump off and replace the gasket to see if that cures the tapping noise as im assuming if oil is leaking out then air is getting in and making it noisy.

How can i tell if the water is circulating in the engine?
Is it a case of waiting till the engine is hot and the thermostat opens then there will be a flow in the expansion tank?
