Hi All Just wondered if anyone has one of these kits from ashcroft and their experience with it. Not keen on paying £300 pounds for a worn overdrive on Ebay and the roverdrive is just too much.

I do not have any personal experience of the ashcroft kit. Have you considered fitting 3.54 diffs from a range rover or 90? it is certainly the cheapest option. I did this to our airportable (lightweight) and it gave me all the extra gearing I needed.

Low ratio was still plenty low, only downside is first gear high range sometimes didnt feel quite low enough - could always drop into low though!

I paid no more than £150 for a pair of 10 spline differentials and I could then cruise at 60mph without an overdrive! :)

We may be able to help find you the correct differentials if you cant find any for a good price, just let us know.

I've got range rover diffs in mine as well, much better, you can drive everywhere in third gear, always a surprise when you realise youve still got 4th gear to go!

It is ordered. They only had two left in stock. Now to see if my 750 tyres are too much or go to 205 tubeless. Thanks for the replys Dean
 
Rebuilt 2.25 petrol with ACR stage 1 head and zenith carb. At the moment it goes off the speedo on the motorway but with too high revs.
 
Speedo (lwb type for 750 tyres) ends at 75 but looks like I can do 80. The brakes are new SWB all round and are very good. They can lock the wheels no problem if pushed hard enough at an MOT test.

The idea is to be able to use the motorway without killing the engine. I was just letting you know what it could do not what I do all the time. I know the limitations of a landrover and my sanity.
 
whats wrong with drum brakes he its not used off road and or kept clean and in gwo then they are more than good enough. I used to drive to wales at 70 - 75mph, in my dads 109 with an overdrive fully laden that was with his own mods done to his 2.25 head. I think i remember seeing the needle bouncing against the 0 mark pin on the speedo once when my brother was driving back from wales in the old days

It will be me. Can,t wait to fit it and try it. Been driving land Rovers 15 years all over the world, so luckily I have some experience in what is safe.
 
I've still got the standard 10" drums all around on my SIII with a 200Tdi engine. I do plan to put 11" drums on the front at some point, but I reckon the 10" drums are O.K for the time being. It's how you drive the vehicle not how much power the engine has, which determines whether the brakes will overheat. It's quite possible to cook the 10" brakes with a standard engine or not, especially here in Wales with all the hills. I go much the same speed as I went when I had a 68bhp non turbo Transit engine in the Landy, except I get to that speed much quicker and the hills don't slow me down so much.
 
i have driven all sorts in all sorts of road worthy and non road worthy conditions from motorways to dust and gravel tracks over mountain passes in all kinds weather from snow and had to blistering heat in all sorts of countries ranging from Afghanistan to Czech republic and obviously the UK. No accidents to date no insurance claims. A well set up land rover should have on problems taking avasive action he need be even at speed lets face it the majorit of MOTed landys are not that well set up mabe some of us are far too content driving power assisted, servo assisted wagons built for the slight and delicate hand of a lady so that they can indeed partake in the experience that is driving
