Might be a stupid question - his mine a "hotwire" ecu?
I think I know what the problem might be, and I think someone might have suggested it already, and one of the garages it went to may have ballsed it up since then.
I bet its the wire from the ignition coil to the ECU.

The word “hot wire” is how the air is monitored going into the plennum.you could also have a flapper…

So go to air box & find the item between that & the engine & post a photo.
Then remove inlet pipe(air filter side) & take a photo of the inside of that item.

Its a 3.9, I dont think they ever came with a flapper, did they?
Its got what I assumed was a maf sensor, looks like a black plastic rectangle on a metal cylinder; like this - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/17429852...jUx+TWTCwrGCf0OgkN/KCOlQ==|tkp:Bk9SR_r08LDaYw

Alright, Ive come to terms that if I dont have a look at them this weekend, Im not going to fix them, Im just too busy with other stuff. Ive been offered £500 each from a breaker, which Ill probably take.
I know this is a land rover forum, but what do you lot make of the Daihatsu Fourtrak? Ive found one thats had a lot of welding done, everyone says that the engines etc last forever, how do they compare offroad to a Landy? Does anyone know how much power can be had by fiddling with the fuel pump, turbo, intercooler etc? They seem comparable to a 300tdi dicso (at least in overall size, etc) but theyre 400kg lighter

I wonder if I am the only one reading this thread who thinks that the biggest dilettante on this forum is now getting his come-uppance?

Dreamer comes crashing to earth.
Take the money and run.
A long way from this forum and bother all those on the Daihatsu forum.

Seriously, my patience runneth out!

Mate really.
If you can’t do basic checks to sort out what you have already.
Do you really think you can fiddle with a fuel pump to improve it

J
Okay - lets not be unreasonable, the disco needs more than "basic checks" - its had "basic checks" at 2 garages, and its had my mate and I at uni try and fix it, and now its time to do compression tests.
Fiddling with a fuel pump involves turning a few bolts/screws to adjust the fuelling, idle, and injection timing, its not complicated, and its very east yo reverse the changes. I cant un-break my disco, I didnt break it in the first place.

Dilettante means someone who is interested in something but has no commitment. Im not quite sure how owning 2 land rovers and spending thousands of pounds and dozens of hours on them is a lack of commitment. Lack of ability, sure. I darent work it out, but I bet if I did, Id find that Id have save 5-figures by not buying a land rover and sticking with my boring first car.
Ive been busy, Im juggling lots of things, a degree, a job, other hobbies, and other project cars. Quite understandably, fixing something that is so likely to break again anyway hasnt been a priority, especially when fixing it means Ive the privelage to spend and other 4-figure sum on tax and insurance to use said thing.
Whatever you buy next needs to come with its own mechanic.
Well neither of the mechanics I took my disco to could fix it. Ive fixed my other cars plenty of times, infact I fixed the disco before too, when the fuel filter clogged and it wouldnt start - I figured that one out all by myself a few years ago.
This problem isnt a simple one, and actually there could well be more than just one problem, and I havnt the time, motivation, nor realistically the skills to be certain of fixing it, so pouring more of my time into it just isnt worth it.

Okay, so enough sh1tt1ng on me for not fixing my own car, like, well, most people, what are peoples opinions on the Fourtrak.

They are known for having good engines, other than that, dunno.
But if you do buy,

But don't go changing anything until you get used to how it is and how it should be.

Maybe just talking to a mirror would help you out.

When you have time, of course.
I'm sorry for that snarky comment. It's just that you have been offered input many times now with no output on your part. It's becoming a drudge to respond to your dithering about.

Seriously, you may have too much on your plate right now. Hopefully your efforts at uni aren't suffering.

Good luck

Engines are bombproof bodies rot.

I've never understood the compulsion to get top power out of something that handles like an old tractor, believe me the power they have is ample for how they drive. :p

But i'd avoid regardless you're better off with something that isn't a pile of shít to begin with.
