Take the back seats out of a P38 and you got a big van
Manual is far better than auto in a dse
Forget coil sprung , air will level out if loaded with wine , coils will sag
Wont cook a engine but will cook air pump motor , can be driven on the bump stops , last P38 I changed theair bags on had to drive it 120 k to get it back here , bit of a rough ride but got here ok with a blown bag
, got own software to reset it so happy days

..thats good to know - manuals seam to be few and far between and the selection in Ireland isnt great . I assume you can tell looking at the air bag if it is perrished or its good for a few hunderd miles ? they just dont blow out do they ? as nan-ber suggests keep the milage low ...I see a few in the UK with new engines ( year 2000 dse on Pistonheads uk) I imagine this is good...since Id still pay the VRT on the milage reading.
A lot of owner sellers give more history details than the garages , obviously they know what they spent...Im not so sure now I would go to a garage, in saying that there are 2 in a dealership in wicklow ...surely they would know their stock ??
and to top it...my wife wants to update the family car :blabla: .... sumthin to do with reliability and keeping up in the years..whatever thats about.
 
toomuchtime, mines an auto, it is sluggish and compared to my mates 99 landcruiser a jap import, i m on a honda 50, t toyota s a rocket. i also drove a 38 manual a dse, and that drove nice a lot livelier than t auto, hard to get t manuals, the air bags do go bang, they perish on the bottom so look for that, if perished replace, they will let you down in a shot, new ones should do 90k miles, you ll do a bag in an hour.
 
hi to all,heres a quick shout from FERMANAGH and agree with nan-ber,not to many rr breakers in this end of the world,but would definately steer anyone toward trillick land rover spares,trillick,co.tyrone.if they have not got what you want ,they will get it at a very good price compared to main stealers...anyway best of luck boys from co.fermanagh :5bcheers2::tea:
 
..would NCT pass a rr if the bags were close to dodgy ? I dont have a garage /lift etc. good tool box is a bag change a simple enough change ...rrveigh mentioned resetting tool, is this necessary for the rr to drive or just to knock off dashboard lights ?

Mine managed nearly 1800 miles faultlessly in one trip last summer, and apart from a rebuilt air block, which needed doing anyway, I've not had to touch it since either. It's a religous thing, you gotta have faith:D:D, should be easy for you guys:D:D

once you get used to the rr,s little ways,you will learn to leave the kids at home so you have more room for tools and also have the added bonus of being able to work at the side of the road in peace:D:D:D
 
The NCT boys struggle with the P38. They can't do any of the brakes tests due to the VC centre diff (they only have a 2 wheel rolling road).
They won't have a code for worn airbags so it will pass.
There really isn't too much to changing the bags anyway and it'll save the compressor if they're changed right away.

lads , if you read my original post - im looking for a 4x4 for space and comfort for drive holiday ...not to fill it with tools ? Can you picture ...all the cases packed up.. wife and kids looking in the back of a rr and a flippin snap on tool chest taking up the luggage space :eek:
or is that why some of them look low at the back :confused:

anyway thanks for replies - I see a few for sale on CBG and N.I. at the moment, so if I can at all - Ill try and look at them over weekend. Ill also keep an eye on this site and might pick up something in UK.
Im not a mechanic - but my thinking is to get one within a month or so ...
and do a few decent runs....if I have confidence in it on a French Trip, Ill take it and if not Ill just take the family car.

I took the car last year and had bugger all room for the wine on the way back :mad:!
Is there much difference between a P38 and a roof box :rolleyes:

Do you have to go to UK for Power box ? or can it be bought and fitted here ?
Is manual better / more reliable than auto ?
Is a coil spring conversion worth considering ?
Besides cooking an engine ....Could a leaking suspension air bag leave you straned on the side of the road?

if you want room for t holidays, buy a cruiser, personally i find t rangie small, had to buy t biggest roof box going for t return goods. got my 38 with no nct, put in a steering drag link 42 stg from trillick, she passed last march, only 2 find out i had to repeat in august, due to t birthday or some usual rubbish, i dont ask any more, passed on t old airbags, wife went 2 france, so 2 be sure i fitted t front 2, a trip 2 france and constant work till november and she passed again, not bad, then t rear bag burst, wife didnt spot it or ask any questions but i did , saw t hole , removed eas timer 2 stop t ecu going into hard fault mode, drove 2 t workshop and an hour later job done, t rangie s mild steel you need 2 keep it rubbed and oiled 2 maintain it , t japs more like galvanised, harder wearing for longer , but in the end it s gone 2 far, you cant save it and t bit of time you put in t rangie has paid off, or your paid off or pee d off. night now.

i find that a bit of sponge on top of toolbox works wonders and the kids see it as an adventure every time we take the old girl out:D:D:D

For a dealer that dont seem a bad price to me , fact its manual , tested , irish reg , brings it down to a 3k sterling price

To check the air bags put on offroad ride setting and then have a look at them to see if they are perished , will be noticable if they are on there way
I allways replace all four even if it only needs one , last set was £170 posted , so not too painfull

I went with the intension of test driving the RR in the garage on Saturday ..I looked into it ...and walked around it once ....and walked away. I was disappointed with the interior space and...condition ....looked better on web site , and I suppose Cream interior isnt good at 118k anyway.(ripped seats and arm rests)
I got the impression no effort was put into "sale" preperation and that if you want a clean RR ...perhaps go to UK (but i could b wrong)
Plus NAN-BER advice ..it just isnt the one for this trip.
I apologise in advance for using the following language on this site....but on Monday night I went to look at a Rexton ...going back on Saturday to test drive !
Anyway thanks for all advice lads ...I really appreciate it.
Im not totally gone off the P38 ,but Ill give it a miss for this trip.

I'd be wary of buying any used Irish owned car to be honest, The majority of owners run them into the ground, can't be bothered to even change a blown bulb let alone service them. They treat the interior like a dustbin. A lot of dealers can't be bothered to even clean them up in an effort to sell them. They are over priced for what they are and the condition they are in, it's a case of take it or leave it. Anyone with any sense would get one in from the U.K. Better kept and better value plus the spec's are better than the Irish because of the high tax they have to pay for luxuries such as Sunroofs, multiple airbags etc.
 
Have to agree totally 100% with Irishrover on this. I've spent over a year looking in Ireland. Finally found one which was bought in from the UK, is fully specced & is in excellent condition both mechanically & physically. Some examples in the UK are over priced but in general their better value. Less than 24 hours & I'll have taken delivery :) :)
 
Again I think I have to agree, mine is a uk import with lots of stamps on the service history. Just make sure you check the Vrt for it before you buy
