Well I called my insurance the other day to tell them that i'd fitted a snorkel and a tank guard.

Well it took ages to try and explain to them what a snorkel / raised air intake is and does, but after a while I think we got there, so he says i'll have to speak to someone else about this, comes back and says my premiums got to go up because it increases performance. This is because the underwriter guy thinks it's a performance air filter, so we do the whole explaining thing again (pointing out that although the intake system has altered it still has a standard land rover paper filter) and that it dosn't make it go faster. So off he goes again, comes back and says he's sorted it, premium still has to go up but not much.

New paperwork arrives in the post today, which says, high performance air filter. Nothing about a snorkel and not a mention of a tank guard.

****s.

So first thing in the morning i'm gonna phone them, complain, complain some more, then tell them to find someone who has the faintest idea what a snorkel is in relation to a land rover and then call me back.

Thought i'd better tell them, well at least the obvious stuff anyway, seeing as they'll do anything to try and wriggle out of a claim.

A few years ago I had a car stolen from outside the house, got it back with no damage but the locks needed replacing. The insurance tried to wriggle out of paying as it was one of my parents cars and I was a named driver, said they wouldn't pay out cos we'd lied to them to get me cheaper insurance.
They wouldn't budge on it, until I pointed out my car (which was off the road with a blown engine) was also insured with the same company, and that they should do their homework before they start making accusations.
They agreed to pay up there and then.

You should try Lancaster Insurance next time. They are dirt cheap, know their Landrovers and lay out the red carpet for Disco owners! :)

just visited their website, and the online quote was £1503:eek:
for a 1992 2.5 tdi
i only pay 430 now!!!
think i'll pass.........

Yes, the same happened to me when I tried the on-line quote. I called them up and the quote dropped to just over £200!

Yeah after reading this thread, i thought i'd have a play and get a quote out of curiosity. i'd need a bloody mortgage £10,097.53.
So looks like i'll have to ring closer to the time for a better Quote.

Yeah they seem a tad on extortionate side, £2815.58 and that wouldn't cover me for business use either. I'll bet I could insure a bloody fararri for less than that!

Anyway, sorted the insurance out with the mods on mine, they dont have a box to tick for snorkel, so they entered it as performance air filter as that was the closest thing they could describe it as. They have assured me that all the details I gave them have been recorded on their system (the girl I spoke to told me what I had said two days ago when I called, so I am slightly reassured), still wouldn,t trust the bastards though.

my gt40 costs me £500 a year, fully comp with recovery - but thats most likely coz i is a borin old fart! - eat ya heart out!:D

nop just the one! That didn't cover me for business either!!!

Glad you got it sorted then.

I also had a similar experience when I was phoning round for a quote for my Disco a couple of weeks ago. 1995 300 TDi, 32 yrs old, 9 yrs NCB, £250 fully comp with Adrian Flux.

They were the only company who truly understood LR mods, and they say "tell us, and as long as it does not increase BHP or value it's covered for no increase in premium".

Also all non-competitive off roading is covered fully comp too, even pay & play days.

lancaster and flux were about the best quotes i had. as for not tellin them about mods , they dont like to pay out if they dont have to.
talkin to a taxi driver once and he told me his daughter had a blow out once coming down a hill in brighton , she took out three cars before coming to a halt. the insurance geezer came to look at her car and because she had alloys fitted without telling them they didnt pay out.
it really aint worth it.
i told my insurance about my wheels being non standard and they said so long as they have the same profile i wont have to pay any extra , its really worth just calling them up and asking them 'what if' i added a snorkle etc just to test the water.
be proper gutting to find your write off isnt covered.

So do you need to declare it to the insurance company if youv'e got your EGR blanked off?

spent the morning sorting out insurance for my new acquisition and am pleased to report that Sureterm Direct are the best (well, cheapest !). They are brokers, and have sourced cheap policies underwritten by Norwich Union - fully comp, with a protected NCB, coverage for greenlaning and non-competitive offroading - £ 296.00

amending my existing policy with Hastings Direct worked out to an equivalent cost of over £ 450.00 !!!!

telephone for sureterm: 0845 2020230 - don't bother filling in the online application on their website, as they just ring you up and go through all the same information anyway....

oh - includes a courtesy car as and when required, and they say they'll make sure it's another 4x4, so no fortnight stuck in a nissan micra :)

Shouldn't need to, as not all Disco's had EGR fitted.

As far as I am aware, if an accessory or mod was available as an optional extra when the car was purchased then it would be covered by your insurance (as long as the parts are genuine).
For instance, I havn't informed them of my bull bar, it was on when I bought it second hand, it is a genuine part and it was available as an option from the factory / dealer.

Anyone want to correct me on that?
