Hi guys, I’ve got a defender with a 300 and the injection pump has started ticking mainly when the engine isn’t under load. My question is would it be better to get this one rebuilt or to source a decent second had one?
Thanks

The engine starts and stops fine so I don’t think it’s an the solinoid. It’s making a very fast ticking noise when it’s driving

Be every surprised if you can hear the injection pump when driving, problem might be engine related.

Have you got one of them cheap stethoscopes?

As above, how sure are you that it's the IP?

I mean you may be certain, but, if you are not, my money would be on something else!

It sounds like it’s comi from the pump when I’m under the bonnet. We had a tractor with a bosch ve pump do the exact same. I’ll dig a bit deeper and make sure it’s the pump
Thanks for all the replies

So just taken the stop solinoid off the injection pump and there is metal fillings stuck to the solinoid. The ticking is coming from that area so now I’m certain it’s the injection pump. What I wanted to know is would it be a better idea to get this pump rebuilt or get a second hand one?
thanks

Seems to be quite a few FiP posts at the moment. Re rebuild or second hand, it depends on 1. budget available, and 2. how reliable do you need the FiP to be using an unknown source. I'm of the old school here, send it off to Diesel Bob for a full rebuild and you'll know it'll be right first time.

You're not a million miles from dieselec between Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth roughly. They found a broken spring in mine and with a reseal came to £80 iirc around 5 yrs ago. No issues since. Real old skool oily counter place.

We’ve had a lot of trouble with old tractor pumps seizing up after regular use in the summer and being parked up for winter. My old man reckons the fuel doesn’t lubricate like it used to “back int day”! I am leaning towards getting it rebuilt because I tow quite a few animals with it and don’t want to break down with them being stuck in the trailer but I’m worried it’s going to cost an extortionate amount with the pump being in a bad way.

Bet you some time in the past it has been fed veg oil.

More than likely. Probably along with some old sump oil for good measure.

Not sure if I’d get time with it being two hours away. I’ll keep them in mind though. Everything diesel related I used to take to sales diesel in Stoke but unfortunately they have shut.
