So, I have been restoring cars for years. Grew up in my uncles garage and a few years ago bought a 280sl Merc, then a 944, then a 71 VW Camper which I still have, then a 67 Beetle, then a 1967 VW Squareback that I won the biggest VW show in Europe with, then a couple of years living in the states I acquired a 1960 Porsche 356 I still have and a 1971 Porsche 911 I still have.

My wife has always wanted a "knackered land rover" so I just bought her one. It is a 1984 with 30000 original miles and I have some dumb questions:

Are all the nuts and bolts imperial?
Is this what you call a series 3?
Any easy upgrades for the engine electric's/ignition to make it more reliable?

Dave

1) Welcome aboard :)
2) sounds an interesting garage you have - all those "Porches" :D
3) A "1984 LR" is a bit low on detail to help you ;) - but its probably an early 90 or 110 - pictures would tell us!!

( and pictures of the posh stuff would be really nice too !!:):))

Hello and Welcome,

Hi, just seen your post. Ive only just joined this forum too, however ive had an early 90 for 4 years.
I share your classic car background and have restored and owned classics in the past.
just an easy answer though to your not so dumb question.
If your series3 is origional it will have 2 1/4 petrol engine. "The same as mine"
I found an electronic ignition mod on ebay, it uses the origional distributor. The internal points system is replaced with new internals. I would recomend you buy the matched coil at same time.
I later gas flowed the cylinder head on mine and overhauled the webber carb that was fitted. Its also worth fitting irridium spark plus. The diference is noticeable! Mine also as a registered lpg conversion, which was fitted before I bought it. The improvements made have improved driveability no end.
I had plans to fit the 3.9 sepentine v8 in mine, but my runabout landy grew on me. As I learned more I realised its significance. Its an origional 90 on a AA chassis. All running gear etc is origional. Because its so early it as the same engine and "B" registration as yours. So being a bit of a purist, where old cars are concerned. I decided just to restore and carry out suttle improvements to origional spec. Thats why im after another one to really create a bespoke machine for me!

Hey That's a very late model S3. If done up very collectible, especially if it's a petrol. Really worth refurbishing, but keep it original! Nice

Ok so more questions... On the question of gear knobs there is a pic below. I have figured the red one for high and low range, the yellow one for 4 or 2 wheel drive but completely stumped on the extra black one with a big "R" on it. Looks non standard. Any ideas?

Think that'll be for the overdrive... and the "R" on the knob will probably indicate that said overdrive is a "Roamerdrive" ....

http://roamerdrive.com/

There are pictures of the unit on the above site.... which will show you whether you have an overdrive ( or perhaps did in the past ).... or a PTO.... or ?????

( of course, it may just be a random knob  ..... )

So you mention the ignition conversion, which one did you use? Also, which iridium, spark plugs did you use?
