So
Simple Sudoko and the answer is........... 3 !!!!
It works with any digit you want to choose. I got there with a 3 anorl, but choosing 3 is just a random number in the context of the question.

You should get one of those karcher pressure washers for the car. They are fab! I have them if I get muddy on my walks.

I have never done sudoko. The question doesn't mention sudoko, only asks us to find the missing digit, why could the digit not be - say - 7? or any other number?
I agree and this is why I said what I said in my first comment!
It is only after Hippo said what he did about it that it suddenly made sense.
I know Sudoko sure wasn't mentioned in the question, but it does make sense. I do a few Sudokos a week, at breakfast time while W reads the news to me whether I want it or not! So a 4 x 4 grid was a piece of pistachio compared to a Sudoko 9x9 grid, subdivided into 3x3 grids.
They come in the local papers we buy and as the crosswords are impossible for me to finish, barely start sometimes, I do them instead. ;)
