So I can come home from a weekend away and switch the heating on and be toasty even when it's minus 5 outside ?
NO. ASHP rely on "always on". They take a lot longer to heat a home from cold than an "inefficient" gas boiler.
But, you can expect a ASHP to be between 200 ..400% efficient re: Kw of energy In/Out.
But it won't run in a power-cut, just like gas boiler.

Went to wix last nite. When yer run yer paw over the ply wood its gottid ripples innit. Mdf is smooth. Gorra sheet of 18mm ply oft and stood up. Bent like a narna. Not easy to straighten oot. Did same wiv 12 and 18mm mdf. 18 much straighter than 12. Fink yer can gettid the last bit of bend oot by securing it to a frame. Will go back when eye is ready to get one but it will be from a new pallet as the ones on top should be straighterer.
It's the trees in these modern times they just don't grow straight enough, probably something to do with climate change, you'll have to wait for Greta to fix it, then all the trees will straighten up, wood won't warp and you can drive your carbon free (as long as you ignore the impact of its production) electric car to go and get some

Boiler change business case.
Current boiler efficiency 74%. New Condensing boiler efficiency 94%, Fuel cost saving c.20% on current bill.
Current GAS cost per day (averaged of the whole year) is £4.74, so the savings will be 20% of this 365 x 4.74 x.2 = £346 PA.
New boiler cost to supply and install £2,500 payback period on savings = 7.2 years just to pay for the changeout.
New "high-efficiency boiler " expected lifespan 10 years. So only 3 year of 346 PA savings = £1,000 benefit over 10 years.
Then get back on the merry go round of paying for another new boiler.
I'm not sure that sticking with my 30 year old boiler isn't still the best option TBH. I expect to be dead in 10..15 years time. :D

+ bed-socks. + sleeping with tomorrow's vest, pants and socks under the pillow to warm them up. PJ's off and undies on under the covers before leaping out of bed to don Shirt + Jumper and trousers. Happy days? No, we were freezing our arses off. :D
As it was all we knew I think we just took it for what it was. Still wore shorts all year round until I went to senior school at 13. Lived in Hull, famous for cold and wind, until 8!
Never wore bedsocks though.
Boarding school dorms were just the same.
