Yep the Silver Bullet was a total new one on me!
It turned out to be (if memory serves cos I only ever made it the once) 3 shots of vodka over a typically American lot of ice followed by just a hint of Scotch. The blokey stood over me giving me instructions. He was very happy! ( I was a bit shocked at the triple vodka)!

And yes the only difference between a Gin Fizz and a Tom Collins is that you stir the Gin Fizz like crazy but you do the very opposite with a Tom Collins just trickling the charged water into the glass to keep it sparkling to the end!!!
so you get Barman of the week!!:):):)

I have two of the Midland mini units. They are discrete and are legal limit. I use a 5/8 wave coil loaded aerial (https://moonrakeronline.com/mini-tornado-stinger-cb-mobile-antenna-complete-kit)
I also have a CRT 2m/70cm (as I have a licence) but they also make CBs which are very good but a bit more spendy!

When we used theses on kit cars the biggest problem was getting a decent "ground plane".

I used to put my mag mount on a bit of the chassis that stuck out at the rear on my Marlin Roadster and for W I had to make a special mount that went on her spare wheel. on the MGTD copy or on the Porsche Speedster copy through her air vent on the engine cover. Neither was very successful. Earthing it was always a problem. So our range was quite limited.
But she did have a stinger type thing just like this.

The time I had a fibreglass cab was a problem, I had a piece of stainless plate in the roof lining which I earthed back to the battery. All he earths on that truck went back to the battery and not the chassis.
Had to hide everything back then so I had a base load in the headboard with just the wire bit sticking through so it looked like a radio aerial.

Ground planes are important but height is might when it comes to distance. My home HF rig is 10m tall :D
On the 90 it is fixed to the rear 'gutter' and uses the roof as its ground plane. On the Mitzy I use a mag mount as it is a steel roof. Being a tall vehicle you have the advantage of the base already being over 2m in the air!

See, I knew you would have some experience of radios :D
When we go out with folk who don't have CBs I hand them a PMR radio. I keep 4 of them for such an occasion. They have hand mics so can be used on the move. The range is around a mile but good enough for convoys.

I’ve got a thunderpole on me defender and get a bit of range depending where I am. It seems to pick up from longer distances if I park next to tall buildings. On AM I get loads of foreigners babbling away but I heard a chap talking on FM who was five miles from Gatwick while next to tall buildings. They must catch the signal and bounce it down or something
 
Afternoon folks/rubber ducks & good buddies:).

Done a bit this morning, now need more supplies;). So sorted the docs for insurance on the p38 and the bike, due in 2 weeks so will do them at the same time as going into town for supplies tomorrow, next week make pick a sunny day and take the bike for its test (never did it late last year no point really) We finally have a test center in town that does bikes which is good save riding 60km and back to the big town:D.

M had a phone call saying delivery incoming, She commented on wow that was quick, so the "white van man" drops off a box. She comments "this is heavy" gets the outer warping off then says " this smells oily":eek: Yep they are mine. Just more stuff for the garage dear:oops::D.

parts for the summer garage project, still need a few more, of course;), but try not to make huge numbers appear on the bank statement is a challenge:oops:. Thing is, it dont matter but its a bit of a game:D.

I have spoken to Russia and Bulgaria on 10m with 10w on my hf rig. I have not got much further than 5 or 6 miles on the CB. I may try a hamstick on 11m on the Mitzy just to see. The building theory is sound as it is part of the exam questions for propagation :)

If that is before CB became legal then it really is a long time ago! 1981, apparently deregulated in 2006 but I don't rember ever getting a licence

Precisely the problem with kit cars, no roof except a soft one, usually.

I also did radio in the cadets, but the way you spoke on them has changed since then! My squadron on night exercise around Huallvingdon, was complimented and told "We wish the TAVR guys were as good!" Which we liked!

The ones on convoys were OK unless the convoy accidentally got split up, which happened and then once out of sight CB was pretty useless.
Doing MSA recovery we had "proper" radios, dunno what they were but they were damn good, had to be lives, depended on them! (we were on the same network as the rescue teams as they sometimes needed us in fact we all went into together usually. We stabilised vehicles, did crowd control, helped with fires, helped get causalties out of vehicles. I once spent nearly an hour simply holding onto a blokes ankles.)
So I'm OK using them, just don't know how they work much although I can tune an antenna.

W and I talked about getting pmrs as we are often at opposite ends of the land and they would come in handy. Keep forgetting to get them. They are expensive in Frogland!
