wont make much difference to how hot it runs unless you are tanning the arse off it anyway , but will make the engine work much more efficiently and give you more power ;)

It worked fine when it was a 19j now its rubbish, I reckon there is an air lock, could this be possible?
I bled all the air out of system via the rad plug and the matrix appeared lower that that plug so assumed the air had got out, maybe I fekked it up sumhow:confused:

The bigger TD rad probably won't be helping, the Tdi might be overcooled by it, especially in winter.

Check the thermostat is working properly as well if you haven't already.

In the meantime though, just wear a woolly hat :D

My sunroof don't leak, but condensation collects on it and drips on me, :mad:
So it's like a leak but not, if they do a thermal one of them langers, I'm sold:D
 
just done this conversion but having trouble with the high compression power steering tried to join my 19j steering box pipe to the 200tdi pump pipe got a local company to do it and the pipe keeps leaking how did u all do urs would it just be easier to fit a 200tdi steering box and dont bother joining the pipes just use 200 tdi ones

PAS pipes off a Disco will fit, they're a little bit short so they don't clip onto the front crossmember, but they do fit. You could make an extended bracket for them if you wanted, but I never bothered and haven't had any problems :)
 
doing my conversion this weekend with Scrappyloz.hence up so early as can't sleep.

currently....

tdi engine out with gearbox and transfer box. massive ball ache moving the crane. lil tip for removing it all. we ended up dropping the gearbox to the floor having lifted engine (we removed all bar bottom 2 bolts on bell housing) just enough to clear engine mounts. this gave us clear access to the top bell housing bolts. bit of teasing back and forth and out it came.

shock of shocks, gearbox looks reconned and in amazing knick, transfer box too. going to use the disco transfer for ratio.

i have pretty much everything but a couple of things i am wondering.....

havent got the extended oil cooler pipes....yet. but have seen 2 solutions on here that might at least in the short term suffice.

1. cut td oil cooler pipes at the elbow and use double ear clips.
2. remove the adapters from the td oil filter housing.

anyone used these techniques?

also i understand the fuel pipe maye be too short. easy solutions?


we are taking all of the remaining ancillaries from disco today. will start a thread on what we've done but it wont be a how to....at the moment it maybe a "look away this is gonna hurt "thread!
 
Everyone I know uses the adapters so they can use the td oil pipes unaltered. I don't have that luxury with my 2.5na so I've just had to extend my disco pipes.

was shocked by 2 things yesterday...

1. how much the front of the disco lifted when the engine etc was removed!!

2. just how lucky i was when i had a minor shunt in it month ago put it off the road......everything is knackered except what i need! massive rust. no front arches, boot had holes everywhere. shocks where literally held on with luck. sills erm what sills.

will take pics today.
 
Yep they're necessary as the rad sits further forward in a Defender than a Disco so they are too short to reach. From memory they're about 30cm too short but don't quote me on that!

I got mine done over the counter while I waited at my local Pirtek UK : Europe's Number One provider of fluid transfer solutions. Hose replacement, mobile hose replacement. but they weren't cheap at about 70 quid! I needed them doing asap though as I'd been let down by a local Landy guy who I'd already been waiting on for over a week :mad: If you have anywhere local that does hydraulic hoses/repairs etc then it would be worth asking them too.

we used the one off the defender they fitted just fine with no leaks.

we have however developed a leak from the rear crank oil seal which we replaced. looks like its coming out again to sort that.

possible cause before we replace it again?
 
Hi, Im doing this but using a 200tdi rangie as the donor vehicle, after looking at the position og the gear levers using the disco box was wondering if it will be same if I use the rangies gearbox, also any probs I might encounter ? all help welcome.TA
 
i've read through the thread and still have a couple of questions.

i have a 200tdi from an auto but will my 2.5td flywheel fit it or do i need a 200tdi flywheel?

can i use my 2.5td complete clutch, a 200tdi complete clutch or a 2.5td friction plate with a 200tdi pressure plate?
 
From experience you need.
The 200tdi heavy duty clutch kit. The td one won't handle it.

You need the flywheel housing and crank case housing off the td. Basically everything from gearbox to coupling to engine from td. Clutch plate you need is 200tdi. Do you still have the auto gearbox? If you fit clutch plate but don't tighten. Take bell housing off old box or cut off shaft if you are binning it. Makes a perfect clutch alignment tool. ;)
 
So, oil cooler pipes.

Today, I removed the oil cooler pipes off an old TD engine, with the plan of screwing them into the 200tdi. I then realised that both of the fittings had a female thread.

I removed the adaptors from the TD engine (male - male fitting) but the threads are differenct between the adaptor and the oil filter housing?

How does this work then?

Right. Remove the oil filter housing off the td engine. It fits to the tdi engine. Reconnect your pipes.

Which rad you using? If the tdi one have you fitted it yet? Lil bit fiddly but ok. You'll need the brass connectors out the td rad too because the curve on the td coupling is different so ****es oil if you don't.

Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread - i have a 1986 110 3-door that is going to benefit greatly from it.

however, said 110 has a kink that I have not seen mentioned here - it is left-hand drive (ex-MOD but served in Germany with BAOR)! Realizing that this is not the norm in the UK (I'm over in the States and this truck is here via Canada) I am wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to work with a Disco TDi conversion into an LHD vehicle?

I am sincerely hoping I won't have to source a Defender manifold set, as these seem to have astronomical prices from being made of hen's teeth and rocking-horse dung sprinkled with fairy dust...
