Hi all,

well I’m still a newbie but there’s been a few changes!!! The previous 1983 super 88 Land Rover Santana. 2.25 ended up been a disaster with regards paperwork and other things such as the ITV ( spanish mot) so it has taken me a while and a little more money but I have have bought a very original 1981 Land Rover Santana pick up !!!

here are few pics before I tell you about the rest of the story and ask your advice

Ok so here’s where I need the advice the landy is a one owner vehicle, and is very original as it has no noticeable problems it has just passed its ITV (spanish MOT) this week. My concern is it’s about 800 km away in a small village on the border of France. Its going to cost a fortune to get it brought on the back of a truck. As I’m slightly crazy I want to fly up to France and take a few days to drive it through the Pyrenees mountains on the way home. I can here the shrieking ha ha !! I am trying to make my mind up... one thing I am considering is changing all oil and filters before the return trip although sometimes I think it’s best left till I get back. if I get back ? Ha ha any suggestions ? Also what tools or important thing would you recommend I take with me. Bearing in mind I have no idea how well the landy will go besides the owners reports that it has no problems he is aware off !!!

Any way the trip has to be done in the next week or so as I’m desperate to get my new project on the drive. Look forward to your comments thanks in advance.

Well, whilst servicing is always a fine idea - and i think you driving it home is a fine idea too, I'd suggest your second best investment would be recovery cover ( the vehicle being the 1st ;))

Clearly, you can check stuff like tyres and wheel bearings before you leave - but if the layshaft bearing lets go part way home, then recovery cover will come in very useful - ask me how I know this ;);) :D

Ha ha ok thanks I am currently looking for cover !

I'd take a few litres of oil to top up..

Engine,gearbox and axle oil

And a pillow ;)

Some tools.

etc

I’d check all fluids, coolant, engine, gearbox, transfer box, diffs, swivels, brake fluid, power steering. and enough to top up on route.
I think it’s a good idea of yours to give it fresh oil and filter, and air filter to.
Also take spare fan belts or aux belts.
Make sure tyres are ok inc spare.
As mentioned breakdown cover would be good.
Also see if you can talk someone in to going on the trip with you, even if you pay for them, it can be the difference between being a fun adventure and an absolute nightmare

Another Landy alongside would be ideal, takes the stress out of the what ifs. Seem to be plenty of them around your way

Great idea! In my mind, I'd really enjoy something like that :)
