Guys - Does anyone know somewhere or someone local in herts that can weld a straight through exhaust pipe for me without it costing me an arm and a leg? Looking just to have silencer cut out middle and back box and straight through welded in to replace. Any ideas?

Ain't really worth it TBH There is no real benifit
Does sound nice thou! ;-)

All you need is straight pipe, grinder and some clamps: cheap option

Grinder, welder, straight pipe: medium option

Grinder, welder straight pipe, pipe bender: pricey option

Hand made stainless steel complete system: expensive option

Yes mate it's the sound I'm after like yours. Problem is I don't have a grinder or a welder (or welding skills). Could use a hacksaw I suppose. I just don't want to end up with a leaking crappy exhaust.

I used the rear from the V8 stainless from rimmer bros and make the rest up from downpipe as you need a flexi. But I had 60mm stainless kicking about so welded it on. But I got a joiner welded it on so I could fit the silencer on for MOT. You might want to think about that!!

I believe jai has a decent welder, might be worth asking him for some beer tokens.

Ref steering problem.

Lets assume you have checked the PAS fluid and all is well. Low fluid and air in the system will give you a serious "groaning" which is easily recognisable.

Without inspecting the vehicle I can give you an educated guess/shot in the dark regarding the stiff/notchy steering. But if your description is correct it will be the steering column UJs. The WD40 lube now wont cure siezed UJs. You can keep out the water and crap on your new ones by using some grease before they sieze.

Another common issue will give you an initial stiff steering upon attempting the turn but will then ease and give you smooth powered steering until full lock is reached. Sticky internal valves in the PAS box causes this.

Good luck.
Thanks for your answer. Didn't find it myself and had gone to garage before reply posted. Was uj next to steering box.

Top gear in st Albans might be worth a call, they do custom exhausts all day long

Lucifus if you can take the section off the motor it should be easy enough

My Only problem is time and lack of it in the
Next few weeks jau

We have the welder, clamps and so on, however we're not the most brilliant of welders. You're welcome to come over to Dunstable and have a play with some spare exhaust pipe we have laying around and see what result you get. Got a decent arc welder and a not so brilliant mig, along with grinders and so on.

Really appreciate the offer from both you guys. Great club spirit. Hopefully we can sort something out next month.

Am Collecting all exhaust bits and bobs as we speak for my 80 and the my 90 as I removed the silly rear box because it's location and sully low exit it was a pita. Luckily its not made any sound difference which is good can't stand a noisy exhaust especially on a long run!!

In 2000 after a good drinking session it was announced we were leaving in 3 hours for teignmouth one pumping head, loud as exhaust in a vaux nova and pure bass II for 4 hours trying to sleep off the hangover was just pure hell!!!

Just picked up a sweet little generator... about 2.4 KW. Certainly runs the compressor and the grinder and Kai's little mig welder. Will be good for comps I reckon.... windy tools and air inflation on site! Quality!

Definitely want to be involved in some capacity... would be nice to take part of course! Kai's got a really hard year at school coming up and it would be a really good way for him to blow off a little steam!
