There is a nut on the steering box... fixed in plce by a tab washer. Jamie says it is 34 or 35 mm but I don't have anything big enough...

Does anyone have anything of that particular size that Icould borrow... and equally, since I now have no steering box in the motor could I cajole them into bringing it over here tomorrow for the price of a cuppa tea?

Chris
I may have one to fit it will have a look in the workshop tomorrow and if so I will call you and pop over.

I have the socket....

I bought it last year when doing my steering box. I'll pop over in the morning (ish)

I got one!! It's 35mm.

Random question, does anyone know anything about amps and hi-fis? My dad has a really old one (1960s) which has stopped working properly and only produces very quiet sounds at different volumes for each speaker. Unbelieveably i found a circuit diagram for the whole unit online!

Bloody hell.... THAT TIGHT! Refitting is not too much of an issue. Kai is going to **** HIMSELF when he finds out how tight that bugger is gonna be!

Tomorrow's going to be fun I reckon!

According to the book you need 176Nm - about 130 foot pounds.

Ere Ryder, I is confuzzled - if the steering box is off the motor..... how you gonna get that there nut undone? Have you got a plan for getting the drop arm off? Trust me separating the drop arm is ...... well, shall I say a bit of a challenge unless you happen to have an appropriate puller. I ended up using an arc welder and a 28lb sledge hammer - needless to say that steering box didn't make it out alive!

Ryder,

I've got my massive3/4" drive socket set, use it if you want. I've got a 3/4" breaker bar if it's that stubborn too.

If you're undoing something that's off the car already you can always use my workbench vice.

Well.. thanks to Kev and Brett... we got the steering box off the motor and even managed to separate the drop arm from the shaft (judicious use of angle grinder... and a handy 20 tonne press).

Got home... refitted the replacement box... now it seems that there are two thread types used on the shaft on which the drop arm sits. Needless to say... the nut from the old drop arm is a different thread to the nut with the new drop arm... bollix

If anyone has spare 33 mm bolt that originates from the drop arm... or can specify what the two different types are so I can go buy one of each... I would be most appreciative.

Any ideas?

Mmmmm....... interesting. As far as my thinking takes me I suspect the "original" box was a later type one (straight arm) but the box you have put on might be an early type that has a different drop arm (cranked with the ball joint in the end) it might be that the early thread is imperial and the later one is metric?? Don't know for sure but it would make sense (maybe?). So I guess the way to go is get a nut for say a 90/91 RRC and also one for say a 94/95 Disco or perhaps check out to see if there are different part numbers for the drop arm nut depending on year.

Sounds like good advice so thats my mission for the morning!

You will have another problem if that is the case!!! You power stearing pipes that come out/in will be a different thread aswell imperial to metric. Trust me I had this problem when I fitted the V8 in mine, luckily I had a disco next to me with the correct pas box.

Don't want to put a downer on it but ain't worth fitting that old box if it leaks aswell as there is to much to change!!

Thought I would tell ya before you struggle to fit it in place!

Gonna have to give the pub a miss this week guys, I'm back in Shropshire and its a long way to go for a pint!!

I do have servicing/wheel bearings to at least buy bits for though... Also looking at roofracks and HD suspension on fleabay.. All this expense may not make the wales weekend but we'll see how the overtime goes!!

You know what... I hadn't thought of that. Spoke to Dingocroft today and they say that there is no mention of a change of part from British to Metric - though apparently some manufacturers or refurbers did use their own particular flavour of nut.

If I truly have the wrong threads on the pipes as well then I suspect that it would be a fool's errand to fit it.

In any case the unit will need to be bolted into place simply so the vehicle is driveable until another box comes up - albeit without PAS.

Be careful as the fluid is also a lubricant for the pulley!!
So you have a few options:
1: DON'T drive it until u get correct box
2: get a different belt to do away with PAS
3: fit the old one for time being.

I have seen them pully's shear off when run with no fluid!!
This well end up being a costly bill.
