i will keep you guys posted on my new tyres, and no doubt a fair few of you will see them in action, i am not 100% certain on which i will go for yet, but have been offered some very unmissable prices on mickey thompsons, so i am checking out the best option for my needs at the moment. hopefully will have a set by the end of the week

Good for you :D Read more on tyres then, because it's all a compromise. Generally the better they are off road the worse they are on the road. But you won't waste your money with BFG's or Kumho's

Many people use their Land Rovers as everyday drives, and so they go for all terrain tyres, which are much better on road, and okay off road. Although in the hardcore laning we did Sun I doubt All Terrains would have coped.

Carpy likes to go hard, so he is looking at Mickey Tompsons, which are even better off road, but not so sure about tarmac :D

Well I'm sure we will see you out sometime soon.

Booger I see you've adopted for your avatar the photo I took of your 90 flying in the mud:cool::D

Great picture even if I say so myself.

Yes thanks for that, you captured the flying brilliantly :D

jeez i didnt half miss out on that one, looks the dogs! one of you lot will have to show me around that lane - i havent done anything north of london since santa pod!

booger supposedly baja mtz are actually pretty good off road. looking at the tyre they look like they should have significantly more ability off road than the bf mt's i am running at the moment, with massive sidebiters which are almost nonexistant in bf mt's, and some decent lugs as well. the baja claw on the other hand is more of a compromise looking at reviews, with some increased road noise - not that it bothers me. its a land rover for christ sake. it is meant to be loud, if it gets louder just turn the music up a notch - sorted.

interestingly both the baja claw and baja mtz seem to have excellent ratings for sand, so i may yet be drawn to the claw because i think its the sexiest tyre out there

opinions???

HeHeHe, I had a hard enough time making my own mind up.

Well it depends on what you want it for ? If it is just laning and pay and play I'd say (knowing you) go aggressive as possible. :D

But for an expedition I'm not sure, for my requirements I thought that most of the time an AT would be best, knowing that I have a set of muds that I could put on if I was going somewhere very boggy.

I say get the tyres you like the most, and if the on road handling scares you, then also get a set of AT's for European travel, cause I'm not sure those big lugs from a grizzly claw would work on a wet icy tarred road ;)

nope not much good for ice, but im ok being scared. its odd i generally go with the theory that at's are best, but the more people i speak to the more i have confidance in them.

i want a decent compromise between laning, off roading and expedition, but i would rather be compromised in the uk that, say, cameroon. however from the sounds of things the mtz (check out some photos they really do seem to offer the best of both worlds - i know someone that did africa in cooper stt's which strictly speaking are mt's) does offer the best of both worlds. i will try and find some real world feedback on what the claw is like in soft sand - but i would imagine with very low tyre pressures they should perform pretty well.

at the end of the day if i cock up and on the test run they do prove useless, i will store em and use them for ****s and giggles here in the uk and get a differant set for the exped

but i would rather be compromised in the uk that, say, cameroon.

That makes total sense, and I tell you what, I'll go on AT's and you go on MUDs, and at the end we will be the only people in the whole world who will really know what tyre is best for an adventurous Africa trip. But to make it fair you need to get a 90 :D

sounds a plan - i pull you out of the ****s in the mud and you help me out in the sand. sorted!

listen mate - i will give you a call later on. im about to head off to pick up some stuff from bournemouth, and on the way back i will be going past the m4 on the m25 so if it isnt outlandishly late i will head your way - i think we have some discussing to do!

Whatever you get we need to test them somewhere adventurous this weekend ? Anyone got any ideas ?

i may not be around this weekend - im not sure yet. got a bbq i have been invited to in wales that i really cant miss! if it goes ahead (given the forecast is ****e) i will have to go but i should know by tonight if i am available or not!

you are right though these tyres must be tested somewhere outlandish!
