Morning all. Need some help with my brakes on my t reg td4. It has suddenly started to pump back when the pedal is pushed down- like when the abs kicks in but it happens braking slowly and gentley in a straight line.

However it is not a constant problem as sometimes it brakes perfectley which leads me to think it is not an air leak. Are there any common problem with the brakes on a freelander or an easy way to check without taking her to a garage?? Cheers luke

Cheers mate. Where abouts is the regulator ring located? I just had a look and found the grey switch attached to the brake fluid pot where u top it up looks half hanging of. Is this sensor just to tell me igf the level is low or has something to do with my problem??

this is brake fluid level sensor and is unrelated to your issue. If you unplug it, it should bring up a warning on the dash.

could be warped disks on the front, jack up, wheel off, spin the hub looking at the disk in relation to a fixed point (e.g. caliper) should be flat as it spins.

good luck.

Brilliant cheers mate. My mate just said warped disk but if it was the disc wouldn't it happen constantly. Sometimes it brakes fine?!

The Abs reluctor rings are fitted around the outer CV joints just above the lower ball joints. Does the Abs light go out one reach 5 mph?

does the ABS light come on when the ignition is switched on.. then the ABS light should stay on until the car reaches approx 5mph

I'm not sure I'll check tonight after work. Why would it stay on untill 5mph? Is that a freelander thing?? I'm pretty sure it comes on when ignition is turned of but goes out like other warning lights within a few seconds??

i would say change the disc's and pads my td5 disco use to pump the brake pedal and it had warped disc's put new one's and it's sorted now

Yes it's a design of the Abs / TC / Hdc ECU to keep the Abs light on until the car reaches 5mph. The Abs reluctor rings don't always put the Abs light on but if the rings have split it causes the ECU to think the wheel is slipping which is why the pedal pulses.

My knowledge on freelanders is basicly zero. Its a t reg with the bmw 2ltr turbo diesel lump in it. Its a 3 door with removable back. Hope that helps. I reckon its had a new engine as the engine drives likes new and also there is a loose wire joining up from the ecu to the blower fans which is so annoying. Perhaps the electrics or loom has been bodged when new engine went in? Can't say for sure though

Can you post a picture of the engine? A T plate Freelander should have an L series Rover engine not the BMW unit ;)
