my wife has a 06 freelander 1 1.8petrol which she adores. It’s developed a engine knock on startup which disappears after 4-5 seconds. The oil and filter was changed not too long ago and the oil level is spot on. Can anyone help ?
 
It's unusual for the k series to have an issue, especially where engine noises are concerned.

Did this noise start after any work was carried out?
 
It had a rebuild 13 months ago. And has been perfect since until now. After a few seconds it stops and runs and drives as if nothing has happened. I was told it might be a weak or failing oil pump ??

What sort of rebuild was done, and to what standard?

It shouldn't make a noise though.

Why would it be a failing oil pump if it's had a rebuild? The K series pump is super reliable and doesn't fail. There's more to this I feel.
 
It had a blown head gasket. Block was skimmed cylinder liners replaced. It was completed by a K series specialist. That was over a year and 15k ago. Until a week ago was faultless. Well apart from the mandatory master cylinder and bracket replacement.
To be honest the guy that said it might be the pump was a local garage
 
I have spent allot on the car as it’s her baby. More than she will ever be worth. But she is the faithful family wagon. Just a bit worried now that it may be serious
 
Can you not get it back to the person that did the rebuild? 15 K miles for a rebuilt engine is nothing. I'd expect it to last 150 K miles.

150k miles - on a K Series HG?

That doesn't sound like what's gone wrong, but even so!

I agree though, at least a phone call to the workshop would be in order to see how interested they are in at l;east having a look at the problem.

@Ed9550 - when you start it up, does the oil warning light go out immediately or only when the clatter stops?
 
I know very little about hydraulic tappets, but could this be something like that? Presumably the tappets need to retain oil when the engine is turned off, can they 'leak' so the oil drains out and causes a clatter when the engine is restarted?

@Ed9550 - do you know whether if you restart the engine straight after its been turned off whether the clatter occurs? Is it only from cold?
 
So. Speaking to the long haired general (the wife) , the oil light goes out straight away as soon as she starts. And there is no flickering.
She clatters after every start heather hot or cold or if switched off and started again straight away.
