Hi there, please help. Only a day or so left before retest runs out. I replaced both ball joints on my D2 TD5 and I can't get the steering swivel or hub carrier to sit up enough on the new ball joints. I've tried the press I used to get the ball joints out, even the jack underneath, but there is still too much of a gap between the top of the swivel arm and the bottom of the ball joint. Is it anything to do with the steering knuckle collect adjustment on the bottom? Should this be slackened off before fitting up and then adjusted? Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks - Adam

Can you could add a photo or service manual drawing of the parts where you have a problem to help us understand?

If the ball joints are pressed in square and flush against the diff, it's hard to see what the problem could be without a picture. The collet can be used to adjust the tension on the steering knuckle but if the ball joints are a good make (Lemforder, etc.), the dimensions would be 100% and it is usually left tightened all the way in (i.e. no adjustment required). Here's a pic of the complete installation that I found on the Internet -

Hi, thanks for your reply. The mouse ate the relevant pages of the manual which is why I was asking for help. I have it sorted now, it was the bottom collet on the steering knuckle. I removed that, then did the top ball joint up, replaced the collet and it now fits perfectly. Thank you very much for your offer of help.

Thanks

Adam
