Hi im shaun I'm new here. Bought my first range rover 4 weeks ago(2003) l322 which was bought privately.
My issue is the 3 keys that came with the car will not sync with the car. Took it to main dealer who also tried to sync but also had no luck, didn't fancy paying them for something I feel I could fix(with some help from here)
Can anyone tell me where would be the first place to look to rectify this fault or if someone has also had this issue.
Thanks in advance

There is a method to coding the keys mate, from what I remember it involves figuring out which is key no 1, once thats figured out you code the other keys by using key 1 in the ignition and then out etc, suprised the dealer couldnt do it though so you may have another issue. Anyway I believe the error most people make is that they think to code key 2 you do it the same as you did key 1 but I think you dont, you actually leave key 1 in and just press the lock/unlock on the desired key.

"Programming a new Key

Replacing a missing master key is quite expensive from Land Rover, try not to get sucked into the extra cost of "Dealer coding" You can do this yourself in 2 minutes by following the simple process below.

1) Get in and close all doors. Turn ignition on and off quickly and remove the key (all within about 5 seconds).

2) Within 30 seconds of turning the ignition off, while holding down the "unlock" button, press the "lock" button three times. Release the "unlock" button. (You may or may not get the confirmation from the door locks.) Holding the key at your head level provides best results as the key sensor is in the side window pillar.

3) Repeat for each key you want to initialize within 30 seconds after the last one you initialized (if you have more).

4) Right after doing the last key, quickly put the key back in the ignition and turn it on/off again to finalize. "

The Procedure is a right pain in the backside....

Initialisation Procedure
1 Ensure the vehicle is unlocked and the driver and front passenger doors are closed.
2 Install a key/remote handset in the ignition switch, then turn the ignition switch to position I and back to position
0 in less than 5 seconds to put the BCU into the initialisation mode. Continue the procedure within 30 seconds
of turning the ignition switch to position 0.
3 Remove the key/remote handset from the ignition switch.
4 Press and hold the unlock button for a maximum of 15 seconds. During this time, momentarily press the lock
button three times within 10 seconds.
5 Release both buttons.
6 Successful initialisation is indicated by the BCU locking then unlocking the vehicle. If this does not occur, repeat
step 4.
7 Repeat steps 4 and 5 with all other remote handsets belonging to the vehicle (4 maximum). Begin the
initialisation of each remote handset within 30 seconds of completing the previous initialisation, or the BCU will
drop out of the initialisation mode and the complete procedure will have to be started again.

My thoughts are that the Transponder Coil in the ignition switch surround is probably duff....

This thing does this:

Transponder Coil
The transponder coil (C0049) is connected to the immobilisation ECU (C0059) by YU and
YN wires. Both connections between the immobilisation ECU and the transponder coil
switch between being both inputs and outputs. The transponder coil reads the vehicle
identification information contained within the key transponder and relays it to the
immobilisation ECU.

Immobilisation ECU
The immobilisation ECU (C0059) is located beneath the centre console, adjacent to the
handbrake. It receives a constant battery feed from fuse 18 of the passenger compartment
fuse box (C0584) on an RY wire, and an auxiliary ignition feed from fuse 39 of the passenger
compartment fuse box (C0587) on a PB wire.
If the immobilisation ECU (C0059) has received a valid signal from both the transponder coil
(C0049) and the steering column interlock ECU (C2055) when the ignition switch is turned
to the crank position, it transmits a rolling code to the Engine Control Module (ECM) (C0331)
on a BP wire.
The immobilisation ECU (C0059) also provides a feed to the interlock relay (C1455) on a B
wire. The energised interlock relay (C1455) provides a feed to the starter motor relay
(C0179) on a B then BY wire.

Note: don't forget to tell us if it is Petrol or Diesel as the wiring details etc are different!!

Ok thanks for the replays. I'm presuming this is the process they went through at the garage as the took it for 20 minutes and told me more investigation is required.
I'm a electrician,is there any way of testing the the transponder coil or is a replacement the only way of finding out?
3L diesel.
Thanks again

Get hold of RAVE you'll find the Electrical schematics and Operation details in it (As well as the Workshop manuals, handbooks etc)

land rover rave technical system

Sure you'll find stuff in there to keep you busy....

Most often, diagnostics may pull out a fault code - my 'guess' is the transponder coil, but if you can start the car, it may not be that....

Note: The wiring details above are for the V8...below is the Diesel:

Also: don't forget to put a location down on your profile as this will help others who could be local to you who has the diagnostic gear to help out!!

Hi I have suffered a central locking issue after jump starting my 2005 RR petrol 4.4 V8 Vogue. Everything worked except central locking on key fob, i tried the above procedure for resetting BCU and remote key fobs - Nothing! I then pressed the central locking button on the dash (under hazzard flasher button)to unlock the RR.Then Physically opened the doors and tail gate, then went around and shut them all relocked using the dash button. Waited 2mins then unlocked the RR using dash button. Then inserted key in ignition turned to position 1 and back to the 0 position, removed key held at head height, held down the unlock button on the key fob for 5-10 seconds pressed the lock button 3 times whilst still holding the unlock button and then released the unlock button. The RR then locked its self and is now working perfectly as before - Happy days!!
