I like the Freelander ,Series 2,Series 3 and Defender i've worked on em all.

I'd rather drive a Landrover than any other vehicle, truth is they've all got issues but they're still better than a soulless Japanese creation, wouldn't you agree.

On the contrary - if it's an expensive problem to come - and we don't know if it is or isn't, cutting your losses whilst unpalatable could be an option.

Certainly no harm in at least being aware what those firms that advertise might offer.

If the guys are right about the head gaskets, might be a decision the OP keeps in mind if she encounters problems

All that said, I feel genuinely sad if she has made a mistake - none of us can lose that sort of money
thats true sh but she has by her own admission said she didnt research into the model anyone spending £5k on any motor aint a small sum of dosh so a bit of background research would have helped 1st

to answer the OP's original Q - as has already been done - 18-20MPG is the norm in the UK for a 2.5 Gaylander. It is, however a notoriously unreliable vehicle and due to its many inbuilt design faults, can be very expensive. Some peeps have, however, managed to get a good one. Lots on here have had their fingers (and other anatomical parts) severely burnt.
You (the OP) have several choices....
1) keep it and pray
2) keep it and be prepared to spend a lot of money on it
3) sell it before any problems occur.
4) keep it, spend lots on it and then sell it, incurring a loss.

Now that is a well balanced post:)

not if i want a reliable motor that starts every time and gets me to where I want and back again. Land rovers have their place and so do other manufacturers.

Now we've got rid of all the diss, it's quite pleasant on here now.

She probably should try to cut and run, they can be a lot to handle even for someone who can keep rebuilding 'em.

Hey you guys!!!......I'm still here....just been reading the link Sean put up on the Freelander Faults Poll.

I could hardly find any about the V6 auto, but loads about 1.8s, TD4s (are they the same??)......but I am only on page 8 .... so I'm back off to read more......

Keep your advice coming....I am reading it! ;D

That's some u-turn:)

Hard call after just days for her

Not really a u-turn, more of an adjustment of thinking, the k-series is/can be bad but the kv6 is something else entirely. If you have lots of cash and patience they can be an amazing motor at the end of the day is it worth it.

Tough decisions should be made after weighing up all available data and it don't look encouraging for a v6 Freelander does it?

''adjustment of thinking'' my arse - so do you stand by your previous statement ?

Petrol is better than doozle IMHO I have one, it pulls like a train and does about 30 mpg.
Doozle is underpowered smelly and slow, it also costs a fortune when it goes wrong.

sure looks like a U turn to me

unfortunately the K and the K(V6) are very similar engines and suffer the same problems - except on the KV6 there are 2 heads and the thermostat housing (held in place with an O ring and one bolt:() is hidden in the deep recesses of the V.
hey do, of course, suffer from all the other Gaylander problems, such as VCU, rear diff mounts, chassis cracking, rear sub frame mounting, to name but a few:eek:.
