Hi everyone hope all is well and a happy new year! Iv just purchased my self a 90 1990 with disco 200tdi engine in. Iv only had discos in the past until just taken the plunge!! Anyway picked her up checked the basics rot engine ect everything seemed fine apart from front brake pipe leaking. Took for a drive for 20 min pulled really well. steering a little loose brakes a bit soft but didnt concern me much so i bought it. Drove 50 miles to get home and noticed temp gage was high just under red got home lifted Bonnet to find it had mucky water all over engine bay looks as thou its its come from cooler tank checked engine no oil water mixture so hopefully just thermostat or rad???? I'm not the most mecanicly minded still learning lol. Just love land rovers! So would very much apreciate any input you guys have.. Thanks for takeing your time to read post. Cheers Jamie

Hi thanks for reply and yes that makes sence. Would you no the best way to check this? I just want to check all the most easy bits first that I could do before I have to take to garage to see if the heads gone (hopefully not) cheers. These are the pics of what happened

Hello and Welcome,

I would say a good engine coolant flush would not go a miss. Run a lot of water through and clean it out including the radiator etc.

Would recommend giving the engine bay a good clean, makes life easier if you are looking for problems.

Cheers

Iirc one of the senders has a green ring and the other black. Part number of the gauge will be stamped.on its back.

Welcome aboard :)

Agreed. 90/defender temp gauges have a bit of a reputation, ( for being crap :(), and IMHO, its worth investing in a proper capilliary gauge, which will measure the coolant temp accurately:) this also avoids any issues getting the right sender for the gauge, or either of them being duff.

Thanks for advise lads hopefully will get there soon!lol. Had a little play today. Cleaned all engine bay filled back up , took her for spin to get up to temp. Temp levelled at top of white then parked up gave it some revs and went down then strait back up agin to just under red???? Did notice as well fuel was all over the place and lights kind ov flickering and I have put new battery in as well. Related?? And no sighn of leaking in bay??? Any ideas??? Cheers

Hi,

Sounds like you may want to start checking your earths, ( a jump lead can be used for trouble shooting purposes ).

Fuel is not a good thing to have all over the place, can you be more definitive?

Cheers

Hi mate, sorry fuel gage was up and down. Could the whole electrics have eneny thing to do with the water??? Cheers

I had a dodgy earth on my 90.

Turn the lights on and the temp gauge would go into the red. Turn them off and gauge is correct.

I went through all the electrics ( as the PO was not the best sparky) Added an Earth strap that was missing, and cleaned and tightened the others.
I also ran exta smaller earth cables from the instrument panel to the chassis.

Once that was done, the instruments behaved themselves.

Cheers

Reference your water issue ,

Has the level dropped since you drove it this time? as I have already mentioned I would flush the rad, heater matrix and engine.

Cheers

Yes went down but like I say went back up again left it ticking over and just stayed in one place? I have bought all cleaners ect to do it so hopefully get cracking on with it tomorrow. So finger crossed should sort it. Thanks for advice. Cheers

OK, Sounds good.

Then I would definitely be looking at checking the electrics out and making sure the earths are good.

Good luck tomorrow, give it a good clean, take care bleeding the system afterwards.

Cheers

If it's any consolation my fuel gauge goes up and down like a fidlers elbow unless it's full but the low fuel light works:oops:

Coolant is often a discussion point here. Not wanting to cause concern, But.

One of the main points is not to mix the newer coolants with the older coolants as they can gel. generally this means not mixing pink and blue / green.

TBH, I would double check what you were given at halfords. Not the first time they would have given out the wrong type, Did they ask for the vehicle details.

I do not have any manuals details for the 200tdi engine , so i cannot confirm , but if it is the same as the 300tdi then this is what the manual says.
