I have an M reg 300Tdi Discovery with 162k on the clock. Quite out of the blue it has started to vibrate heavily when I acclerate. Also sometimes it makes a really loud clanking noise at the same time just like dragging tin cans along the road as I accelerate and move up the gears. I can't hear this all the time, but the vibration is very evident especially when I go up hill with weight in the car.

The MOT is due in a few days so I would be grateful if you could give me some ideas as to what the problem may because if its likely to be anything really serious I may just consider taking it off the road.

No eggspert but I think it sounds like a dodgy UJ on one of your propshafts. Does the noise increase with RPM or road speed?

I will have to watch what I say with you won't I you wit!! Anyhow thanks for replying and well I would say the noise speeds up with the revs, but is that loud to start with its difficult to say it gets any louder. And as I say the noise isn't there all the time, but the vibration is more or less. Also the vibration is noticibly worse today than it was yesterday. It seems to be getting worse very quickly.

Toad I would get underneath and have a good look round asap. It does sound like maybe one of your propshafts is about to part company with the rest of the vehicle. If it's making that much noise any play should be easy to spot just by wiggling them around with your hands. If the propshafts are ok you might then suspect gearbox, transfer box, clutch, diffs, etc could be any number of things.

As said, get under it and check the props any excess movement.check for lift in the front prop where it go's into the transfere box as it could be the front bearing worn.

First of all Stig, no it's not in diff lock. Funny enough that was the first thing I checked. Hughesy I will get under it 1st thing in the morning and check for movement. I will come back to you.

Thanks for the replies Wreckhunter & Odenne. I am on the case and will let you know what I find tomorrow.

whilst under check that your tyres are not seperating or have any bulges(have had this on my own) and also wheel nut security

I were only interested cause it was gonna be a new scientific discovery...Pikey just wanted to get into your kecks
