Thanks Woot. It had gone through my mind that I should do what you suggest, but I am very reluctant to take anything off my good one. I think I have resigned myself to taking my faulty one off the road. It has covered 161000 miles and it is very rusty in places, this being because I live right on the coast. The engine is very good, but I feel I don't want to get into throwing good money after bad on the rest of it. It has a wealth of spares on it that I can use on my good car so I don't feel that its a total loss.
I bought my good car only recently and it is a cracker. It is older than my original, but it is in fantastic condition and only has 96k on the clock and it only cost me £2000.
