Hi dont know if anyone is interested , But I have fitted an HUD to my sons car ( just learning to drive) its brilliant, all dash shown on lower section of windscreen. Plugs into diagnostic socket. took about 10 mins to fit.Theres some clever stuff about for Dinosaurs like me.

To me that constitutes another distraction. I do not know about the UK, but nothing is allowed on the windscreen in a vertical band about 30cm wide in front of the driver over here.

Correct, ridiculous addition specially for a new driver.
 
I am not in France so it doesnt matter. If its so bad for night vision ,why do pilots use it in fighters captains use it in tanks and so on. as for distraction, you really need to try it, you dont need to look at the speedo its in your sight all the time. I wasnt looking for anyones approval I merely though someone may be interested

I was more teasing than anything really.

But I'd be interested to know how manufacturers get past the legality you cite?

Remember, it's a hologram, not a furry dice.

They don't. The law in England is stupid, there are many things that are legal to sell but not legal to use.
Anything bright in the screen is going to reduce night vision apart from anything else. If this stuff was legal to use, do you not think the gadget obsessed motor manufacturers would not be using it?
Of course you could project the image to one side of the driver segment, but it would still be a distraction and reduce night vision.
Oh and it's not a hologram, I have a speed app for my phone that will produce a HUD image on the windscreen, I do not use that mode.

It could certainly be an subconscious distraction. Maybe ok for someone experienced but not i would think a good thing for a inexperienced driver to have to deal with.

Well not hologram, poor choice of words.

But car manufacturers DO use it, albeit on the higher end of their line ups.
It was/is considered safer than looking down at the instruments.

No personal experience of it, but I was under the impression it was mainly speed that is projected, just below normal line of sight, which takes less effort to see as you merely adjust your focus.

Reading back the op, having all systems displayed may be distracting, but even then the primary driver instinct is to look ahead.

If you could read farcebook on it then I'm with you 100%.

Quite an interesting bun fight going on here, and I respect all points of view. I remember during my military career new tech coming in and as a young guy embraced it and it became standard kit but as I got older and progressed began to say when new kit came in what's wrong with the old stuff and questioned new things. For example I am a map and compass guy and it doesn't need battery's or a power supply but never give both to an officer. (some on here will get that joke) but now its all GPS and few can read a map. I now use GPS have a great sat nav system for my vehicle that I use all over Europe. However, I do still keep in my vehicle a map both AA and Collins of Europe. Lets just say at my age I am an analogue guy in a digital world. I was in the USA recently and hired a car, it came as standard with HUD. It did take a bit of getting used to but after a few hours never noticed it distracting me from looking ahead it felt very natural. I feel it will be the way ahead. I think good on tarphenry for getting ahead of the curve legal issues aside. That's my two penneths worth for those that understand old money.

I agree - technology is great - when it works. But without the basic understanding and common sense e.g. ability to use map & compass, you are screwed if the technology fails or if you trust it blindly (e.g. people following satnav instructions into fords etc).

I don't find the heated wires on the screen distracting, you look through them, its the same as my sat nav on my truck, you look past it, you don't even notice its there, unless you re focus on to it
 
I have never used or thought of an HUD display. it was my son who mentioned the device as it is fitted to the driving instructors car.! I used it for the first time yesterday, its magic.it is in no way a distraction and is visible all the time.as for the "experts" comments. it was not a discussion I was merely informing members of something I had done that may be of interest. If it is, good, if not I am not concerned. it seems that if you dont like it ,its wrong, as with most things nowadays.
 
You carry on as you wish, at least when he has a prang it will something to blame it on.
