Hi all
Im looking for some information as i haven't a clue.
My OH would like a sat nav or GPS System for use whilst green laning, like the ones that the Land Rover club use. Please could you give me any advise that would enable me to be able to purchasing such a system.
Your help will be much apprecaited.
Thanks

Look on ebay for a PDA with GPS capabilities IPAQ6915 been among the better ones. The get a copy of MemoryMap to go with it. This is the system I use and apart from the small screen and glare from the sun making it hard to view sometimes. It is a brilliant system.

or run mem map on your laptop like i do with a bluetooth gps

Try the 'Road Angel 7000' one of the better sat navs about with the bonus that it will run Memory Map; look for road angel 7000 on ebay and theres an SD card with memory map and a selection (of your choice) of os maps.
Alternately look for a 'Road Angel 7000 Adventurer' as this is the shop version that comes with Memory Map pre installed

Thank you for you reply and help.
with memory map, can you put in a route and it guide through all the green lanes in that area, is that how it works?

Nope.

Memory Map is basically a flat map viewer that will record your track as you go along .. It was designed for walkers so can give you a heading and an arrow showing which way to go to the next waypoint .. but that doesn't work on the road unless you put a waypoint at every corner and bend etc, which is really, really awkward. However, because it moves the map as you go along you can zoom in closely to determine which way you need to go along a pre-prepared route. You can make the route or track any colour so it's relatively easy to see as an overlay to the map.

I use a Dell X51V PDA with Tom Tom bluetooth gps receiver which works well. I tried it with the laptop and bluetooth dongle, but that's a bit big, though very good results ...

However I'm working on using the laptop flat in the passenger footwell, with a smaller remote screen and remote mouse/trackpad so I can use MM on a decent screen and simultaneously record any laning/driving I do with a webcam .. only thing I need is a decent, small (7 to 10") LCD screen and I'll make a mount for it so it's not too obtrusive.

... so if anyone's got a small LCD monitor they don't use, please PM me, but must be very cheap ... even a 14" LCD screen will be better than having to mount a complete, open laptop!!!

Thank you for you reply and help.

Yes sort of. It will show your position as you drive along and as long as you can read a map and know what a Boat or Orpa looks like, then you will be able to figure out where you need to go. You can also plot a route in the comfort of ya armchair and load it into ya pda and follow that as you drive.

Is there any equipment that will tell you where the next green lane is in an area?

Yes There is a TomTom POI that lists the start and end of a greenlane or ford. But not the actual route of the lane fr that you'll need an OS map. either paperbased or on MemoryMap.
