Yes you can winch with the tfer box in neutral or do the same with the tfer in low range, but the problem with that is you may overrun the cable and it will then be loose on the drum, which then screws the cable up as it then pulls into the loose layers of wire and make a right fooking mess!
People mainly use the gears as well as the winch as they have to help their electric winches, with the pto winch there no need as it will just keep pulling and pulling.
On both mine I have fitted an emergency shut down button on the wing top, makes spooling the last bit of the cable in a doddle, just as its about to go tight pop the button, engine stops and wire just nipped up nice.
I normally use 3rd gear for most winching, the only downside is they are slower than the electric ones.
Other thing to watch out for is the pto hangs down a bit low, if you google therees a guy who caught his pto and ripped it clean of the box, luckily he had the blank plate in the cab so could still get home.
I bought and modded a terrafirma trans guard to protect the pto, handy as its catchs any oil leaks to!
Its pulled me out of some right claggy **** many times.
