Hi all, changed fuel filter [disco td5 2001] did the bleed sequence started first time, tried a few times started ok . forgot to mention filled new filter before refit. wnt for a drive, went about 2 miles lost power then stalled couldn't restart, got towed home unable to start since then.Tried all bleeding techniquesbut nothing Any ideas please.Dave

Recheck everything you did to replace the fuel filter. Check also that you haven't left any packaging, etc on the filter and that it's properly seated on the housing.
If it ran before you changed the filter then the first place to look at is what you've done, how you did it and finally, whether the filter is faulty.

When you say tried all bleeding techniques, what did you try?

Have you checked diesel comes out of the bottom of the fuel filter when you undo the plastic connection?

Did you change the filter for any reason?

Can you hear the pump running?

The purge procedure can take a few times to work. How are you doing it? does the EML light flash on and off?

Cheers

Thanks for the speedy replies, ordered a new fillters just in case. Bleed sequence pressed throttle 5/6 times eml flashing waited for it to stop and tried to start, it seems to want to start black smoke comming from exhaust but no start, will give the map sensor a clean and try after it stops raining. Would easy start help? Dave

As @neilly has said, the purge proceedure can take a couple of times to fill the lines and clear any air.
From what I've heard from others, I wouldn't advise easy-start except as an absolute last resort. It seems that engines can become almost "addicted" to the stuff and won't start without it.
Provided that the battery is good; better than 10.5 volts when cranking, the Td5 engine is usually pretty good starting.

A good point, my battery last year was getting a little old, I tried the purge procedure to see how it worked and when I went to start the battery would not start the car.

Cheers

If no joy i've seen cases when ''tired" pumps failed after filter change cos the HP stage was on the way out but worked as long as the pump was primed but when it got a bit of air the HP could not build up again, in normal conditions there's no need for several purge episodes after a filter change , mine starts right away without any purging just ignition on II for about 29 seconds before i crank it.

I'm sure that would sound really rough when trying to start if that was the case

Thankyou all who replied. Starting problem all sorted, as was suggested fuel pump was knackered, fitted a new pump purged system started first time.albeit plenty of black smoke to begin with. Dave
