As I read it, you and John might be looking at putting an MGF electric power steering column onto the freelander hydraulic power steering rack, and it was the hydraulics at the rack you'd need to "do something".

No Ali, just the column.

The FL1 rack will simply need the return pipe to be connected to the flow pipe. This way dirt won't enter the hydraulic piston or valve assembly, and the residual fluid in there will keep it lubricated.

Like I said, nothing more than looping the hoses into each other... Only I typoed it and it and said "probably nothing more than looking the hoses to each other" - which was meant to suggest looping the hoses. I did however have another thought for you, if you do go down the route of using the MGF column for your power steering... ¿You could simply reinstate the standard power steering reservoir and connect the tank directly to the two ports on the rack to effectively use the reservoir as a header tank? And because there would be naff all pressure in it, you could be pretty fast and loose with the way you join the hoses/pipework.

For now I plan to keep it simple and use the GM electric/hydraulic pump. I was talking to my son today and he told me of a local shop that can make up a new hose for only a few quid so if I have trouble with the banjo connection I'll go that way.
I planned to have a go at it yesterday but kinda was overruled.
 
I was going to post something bah-humbuggy about this whole 25th of December pagan festival coopted by the ROMAN*(empire) Catholic church as the birth of "Christ", which bares no resemblance to real-world calendar - Where do you get lambs in December? - is used as a reason to stop us playing with our toys (albeit they are "baby-Land-Rovers") ?

*Romans have a history of "adopting" local deities to make it easier to acquiesce their latest conquests, and thus propagated Chistianity across Europe under the ROMAN Catholic church instigated by Theodosius I

But then I realised it would be a bit hypocritical of me, given I didn't work on my landy on the 25th or 26th, I was however at the workshop for a couple of hours on Christmas Eve, and there was beer on offer for 25th & 26th, so it was a choice of cold beer or cold bah-humbug mechanicing in a freezing workshop, no brainer innit?

LOL, much as I'd like to chastise for being off topic in my build thread your post was just too entertaining (and accurate) to do so.

PS, it was cheap wine and Whiskey that kept me busy yesterday and car washing followed by puncture changing today. :eek:
Maybe get an hour or two tomorrow. ;)

I'm glad you seen the humour in it :) I've just updated my thread on the fault I'm chasing down on my hippo with what's been done so far and the planned next steps for whenever COVID restrictions permit me getting back to it. The advantage you and John have is you are doing your vehicular stuff at the house, ergo you can do stuff anytime the missus lets you go and play, whereas I'm doing mine in an industrial unit three miles from the house, meaning I need to be careful not to get huckled by plod for breaking COVID restrictions going there.

I wouldn't want to pay so much for a car where the engine is being ripped out but then again the engine should be worth a few hundred quid on it's own.
If I can get him down to £800 or £850 I might bite.
It sounds like it has a dodgy clutch or gearbox but either way not a problem for me.

Looks OK Ali. It might be worth paying a decent amount if the bodywork is good, as that's the bit you'll be wanting to keep. ;)

Also if it's a sport premium, it should have heated seats (helpful in an EV) and a heated front screen, (again helpful in a EV). ;);)

Timing isn't ideal, but it could well solve the issue of finding a decent one later? ;)

Take into consideration that finding a similar spec 1.8 with a busted engine could cost say £4-500, plus delivery. The engine will be worthless, and the gearbox you can't use. Also no 1.8 had the HFS, so if you wanted that, you'll need to retrofit it at huge cost.

Now a fully loaded TD4 with a working engine for £1000, doesn't seem to bad. You can drive it home, so saving some money there, and the engine will have some value, as will lots of the ICE components you don't need.
This could bring the cost down to a similar amount as a busted engine 1.8, and you don't need to spend out on a HFS as a retrofit. ;)
 
You're right of course John but I have so much to do to the project car this one will be sitting for months.
I can hear the complaints already from SWMBO so I will hold on for a while. There will be others
 
I had a go testing the power steering pump and although it is working I have a problem with it.

It seems to be pumping the entire time which is not normal. I posted in Openinverter.org about it and they were saying yes it is a bit noisy but not this bad and it should only draw 8A or so when idle, not 28A
 
There's something amiss there Ali.

I'm not familiar with this design of PS pump, but it definitely shouldn't race like that.

I reckon there's an ECU missing from the system.

I'll see what I can find.
