Left rear CV joint breaks at the circlip which allows the CV to slide out a bit. This damages the diff splines and then no drive. Any ideas on what may be causing this guys/
As a result of reading this thread I have had a really good outcome to my FL 2 noisy diff problem. I phoned LR Customer services who told me to get the problem confirmed by a main dealer and phone them back. Went to Harwood's in Chichester who have been brilliant. Confirmed the problem yesterday, asked me for evidence of regular servicing (mainly by Indys) and put the case to LR on my behalf. My FL is 08 with 56K on the clock, so not under warranty but relatively low mileage. Today LR phoned the dealer to say that they would meet the bill 100%. Hopefully this will be a precedent and better than a gesture of a couple of hundred quid towards the repair.
Thanks LankyLad, Im in a similar boat to yourself, I am now in the process of having spoke to Customer Services and am now waiting a call back from the local dealer for them to review. I will keep the thread posted on the outcome
Of note an indy (LRover specialist) is quoting £1047 all in inclusive of VAT for repair, where if I go to a dealer it will be a £1600- £1700 bill. So hopefully I can get a 100% payment form LR Customer services

I purchased a May 2007 Freelander 2 Td4 in May 2010 from a main dealer which had done 30k miles. It has now done 80k miles and about 2 months ago it developed a humming noise from the rear end which gradually got louder. I took it into the dealer who wanted to check it out for a price, so I took it to a specialist 4x4 who immediately identified differential problems and required replacement. Because of costs I decided to take it back to the dealer who then checked it out and confirmed diff problems but declaried a partial diff change. Due to the lower cost I decided to go with the dealer BUT whilst in for reapir was informed the wear was worse than 1st thought and a complete new diff was required. I reluctantly agreed. The refit took a week!
Within a week after the repair i noticed a different noise when I accelerated from stationary and turning right - a clunking noise, which disappeared quite quickly.
Having reported it to the dealer it is now back in their workshop. I have now been informed that they want to replace the Haldex system - another £1500. No warrantees apply.
So, from an original partial diff replacement at £550 I am now being expected to swallow a bill of over £3000!
Has anyone else had similiar experiences and is it reasonable to expect the dealet workshop not to have noticed the Haldex problem when they were replacing the diff. Or am I being stitched up?!

Your problem sounds almost identical to mine.
I bought my 2007 FL2 in 2010: 70000km
I replaced had a local garage replace the rear dif in 2013: 122000km
I am now being asked to change the Haldex in 2014: 139000km.
Total cost to date over 4000.
I am having a lively discussion with LR in France who basically "don't want to know" For them this sort of wear on a quality car that has never been used off road is "normal". To make matters worse they state that LR does not have the same policy for replacing faulty parts throughout the European Union.
So whats the haldex firmware upgrade for? Is it coming on when going round corners etc? I wonder if it staying on and causing transmission wind up on the strsights?
Is there an oil and filter service scheduled for it....cos it will need one?
What oil are they putting in the rear diff?...hope its not haldex oil seen this done before by clueless technicians
Or is the whole lot..... diff and haldex unit just underated for a heavy hippo 2
LR France are telling me that FL2s have not been recalled for this problem? I would be grateful if you have any information to the contrary.Thought this was a known fault and indeed recalls for 2007 - 2009 FL2's??
Also believe 2010 onward FL2's have the "replacement" rear diffs as standard.

I suspect if it stayed on all the time then transmission windup would occur. As im pretty sure there is no center diff as if there was what is the point of the haldex?Haldex works when going round corners. It made driving in track fun as my underpowered Yeti would corner faster than cars with twice the power.
If it detects slip of any kind it will kick in.
Fitted to heavier cars like XC90 etc.
Haldex doesn't cause transmission windup as far as I'm aware.
