Left rear CV joint breaks at the circlip which allows the CV to slide out a bit. This damages the diff splines and then no drive. Any ideas on what may be causing this guys/
 
As a result of reading this thread I have had a really good outcome to my FL 2 noisy diff problem. I phoned LR Customer services who told me to get the problem confirmed by a main dealer and phone them back. Went to Harwood's in Chichester who have been brilliant. Confirmed the problem yesterday, asked me for evidence of regular servicing (mainly by Indys) and put the case to LR on my behalf. My FL is 08 with 56K on the clock, so not under warranty but relatively low mileage. Today LR phoned the dealer to say that they would meet the bill 100%. Hopefully this will be a precedent and better than a gesture of a couple of hundred quid towards the repair.:)
 
Hey guys, just joined LandyZone because of this issue. I own a Model year 2009 Freelander here in Brazil. Just went to my dealer today to get the 72k km service done, and I mentioned I was hearing the whirring noise. Was not sure what it was and they mentioned it is the bearings in the rear diff that would need to be replaced and since LR does not replace just bearings that the entire rear diff would need replacement.

Was quoted an astounding 5800 Reais or about 1500 British Pounds just for parts. Labor would be another 250 pounds.

For those of you that have contacted LR directly, was that successful? I am sad to hear that there was not a recall on this issue since there are so many reports. Should I reach the LR headquarters in England? I am afraid I will be brushed off by the dealer and Brazilian LR. Even the dealer's head mechanic was telling me that I should get this fixed very soon and that it may be very dangerous. Can I still ride with the diff problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Depends which bearing has gone in the rear diff.

Only the pinion bearing can be replaced in the rear diff. Refer the dealer to LTB00342.

I would advise working with the local dealer and LR Brasil first and then if no joy go to LR UK
 
This is interesting. I have a Freelander 2 I bought new in Oman Jan 2010, then shipped in a container to Spain where I live now. Whining noise started about 4 weeks ago, gradually getting worse. The car has never been off-roaded and always driven on good tyres but diff bearing to be replaced (LR dealer Mallorca diagnosis) with only 36,000 km / 22,500 miles on the clock. LR Global Customer Relations wrote that there "are no service actions or recalls" for this problem and refuse to contribute to > EUR 900 cost. Clearly there is a longstanding problem with Freelander 2 diffs that LR is failing to address.

Thanks LankyLad, Im in a similar boat to yourself, I am now in the process of having spoke to Customer Services and am now waiting a call back from the local dealer for them to review. I will keep the thread posted on the outcome

Of note an indy (LRover specialist) is quoting £1047 all in inclusive of VAT for repair, where if I go to a dealer it will be a £1600- £1700 bill. So hopefully I can get a 100% payment form LR Customer services
 
There definitely is a Technical Bulletin for this (atleast in the uk). As mentioned above it is LTB00342v2, which covers 2007-2011, VINs ending 000212-257090.

Repair time for this is 3.2hours (3hours 12minutes), so you can work out labour rate your being charged from that.

This however does only cover pickup from the front pinion bearing.

Goodluck to you guys to get this issue resolved in a timely and financially viable manner.

Following on from my previous info as above, I can now confirm that LR Customer Services have agreed to full repair of the vehicle after having it in for diagnosis. This is being carried out as I type today, and is being done by Stratstone at Bury. For my inconvenience I am now in possession of a Jaguar AF for the courtesy vehicle (nice drive but don't have the same height advantage as a landy) as a freebie too. So good luck to all you other drivers that have a similar issue.

I would like to join the debate and add my twopenny worth:

I have a 2007 Freelander 2 that had its rear diff changed in a LR specialist garage in 2013 with only 120 000km on the clock; I paid the bill myself, a hefty €1500.

One year later I have strange noises when turning on full lock to the left and to the right, and am now told that the "Haldex" needs changing that is going to cost €2825!

This is over €4300 in just twelve months for a car that is worth less than €12000 on the second hand market.

I have turned to LR France to see if they will contribute as I don't feel that this should be happening to a car that has only done 140000km (and isn't there an EU rule about mechanical failure for cars in the Union that have done less than 200000km?).

I have to take her in for another "diagnostic" next Wednesday, prior to making a claim; does anyone think that I have a chance in Hell, or more interesting, does anyone have another solution?

I purchased a May 2007 Freelander 2 Td4 in May 2010 from a main dealer which had done 30k miles. It has now done 80k miles and about 2 months ago it developed a humming noise from the rear end which gradually got louder. I took it into the dealer who wanted to check it out for a price, so I took it to a specialist 4x4 who immediately identified differential problems and required replacement. Because of costs I decided to take it back to the dealer who then checked it out and confirmed diff problems but declaried a partial diff change. Due to the lower cost I decided to go with the dealer BUT whilst in for reapir was informed the wear was worse than 1st thought and a complete new diff was required. I reluctantly agreed. The refit took a week!
Within a week after the repair i noticed a different noise when I accelerated from stationary and turning right - a clunking noise, which disappeared quite quickly.
Having reported it to the dealer it is now back in their workshop. I have now been informed that they want to replace the Haldex system - another £1500. No warrantees apply.
So, from an original partial diff replacement at £550 I am now being expected to swallow a bill of over £3000!
Has anyone else had similiar experiences and is it reasonable to expect the dealet workshop not to have noticed the Haldex problem when they were replacing the diff. Or am I being stitched up?!

I bought my 2007 FL2 in 2010: 70000km
I replaced had a local garage replace the rear dif in 2013: 122000km
I am now being asked to change the Haldex in 2014: 139000km.
Total cost to date over €4000.
I am having a lively discussion with LR in France who basically "don't want to know" For them this sort of wear on a quality car that has never been used off road is "normal". To make matters worse they state that LR does not have the same policy for replacing faulty parts throughout the European Union.

So whats the haldex firmware upgrade for? Is it coming on when going round corners etc? I wonder if it staying on and causing transmission wind up on the strsights?
Is there an oil and filter service scheduled for it....cos it will need one?

What oil are they putting in the rear diff?...hope its not haldex oil:eek: seen this done before by clueless technicians

Or is the whole lot..... diff and haldex unit just underated for a heavy hippo 2

Haldex works when going round corners. It made driving in track fun as my underpowered Yeti would corner faster than cars with twice the power.
If it detects slip of any kind it will kick in.

Fitted to heavier cars like XC90 etc.

Haldex doesn't cause transmission windup as far as I'm aware.

LR France are telling me that FL2s have not been recalled for this problem? I would be grateful if you have any information to the contrary.

I suspect if it stayed on all the time then transmission windup would occur. As im pretty sure there is no center diff as if there was what is the point of the haldex?

Looking at a picture of the rear diff it does look a tad on the all size for a F2 no idea if the volvo 4x4 uses the same. But my golf has a gen 1 version and the diff looks quite substantial compared to the F2....and im just talking the actual diff part not the haldex...

I find it strange that its destroying its bearings in no time:eek:

When vw 1st brought out the haldex, it was shocking how many dealeships had no idea what it was and that it needed servicing...3-4 years down the line they started making a point about the haldex and its servicing regime....

Might have been too late for some high milage drivers...

My 2007 FL 2 has just started making a noise, just had it in for a service at an Indy garage and asked them to check it out. They say it could be either rear wheel bearings or the Diff. Does anybody know of anyway I could do a test to find out if rear wheel bearings or Diff making the noise
 
My Freelander 2 is just 3 years old with 35k on the clock and already needs a rear diff replacement.
Having read lots of posts on various websites it is clear that this is a big problem and Land Rover should be taking responsibility for making customers aware of the problem.
I have been offered 90% towards the repair bill, which, in their words was a 'good will gesture' since my warranty had literally just run out (how convenient!)
In my opinion this is not good enough, this is a well documented problem and LR should be recalling all these cars and replacing with better quality parts, free of charge.
 
I have been considering purchasing a FL2 for a while now but in light of this and also the PAS problems i'm seriously having doubts that another Land Rover is the way to go which is a shame!
