I'm following this string closely as it concerns the same problem that I posted a couple of weeks ago. I have a rendez-vous with LandRover to do the diagnostic but I can already guess that it will be "Ignition timing deviation". The intermittent motor warning light and power loss started happening following exchange of the glow-plugs. My local non-Land Rover garage had trouble replacing the plugs, especially #4 => requires removal of injector pump. (I should've told him to replace only plugs 1-3!). My 2.0l freelander has 200000kms on the clock, so my guess is that he either prompted weakness in the injector #1 needle sensor, or prompted weakness in the injector pump/timing solenoid. I'm thinking it's most likely to be the timing solenoid as I think there's less of a risk of damaging the injector #1 sensor.
Note : When I got the car back after replacement of the glow-plugs, each time I started the engine, there was a 5 or so second delay before the accelerator worked properly. So I took the car back in and they fixed that issue and the engine almost explodes into action even in sub-zero temperatures. However, after that visit, the engine warning light/power loss issue began. The warning light goes off above 120kmh in 5th gear (>3000 revs) and remains off. The warning light goes off if you take your foot off the accelerator rapidly. It remains on if you lift the accelerator very slowly.
Questions : could the timing deviation be due to the physical positioning of the injector pump on re-installation (mechanical issue), or is it a electronics/sensor issue?

Thanks for all the excellent information up till now. I'm learning fast. Appreciate it

somebody else had the same problem as you last year after changing the glow plugs. I think it was Chaser. If memory serves me correct it was down to the wire on number 1 cylinder being chaffed or loose. It might be worth doing a search.;)

Ratty, thanks for the suggestion. Garage checked and apparently it's not that. I'm seriously thinking about the timing solenoid rather than the injector sensor.

However, I don't want to "hijack" stevieg76's string so I'll stay quite and check this posting from time to time to see if/how stevieg76 resolves his problem and then use my string to solve my problem if it's not resolved by stevieg76 solution. Thanks again!

So that's my problem solved. I took the car into the Land Rover garage at Montpellier. The technician said to leave it with them 1 hr, or perhaps 1h30, or just leave it for the afternoon as they had a lot of things going on. When I came back at the end of the afternoon, problem solved. It was just a question of re-adjsuting the timing. And now for the surprise .... cost of diagnostic plus timing adjustment : 200 euros!!!!!! They billed me for 2h30 of labour! Can someone tell me how long it takes to diagnose and re-adjust the timing on a 2.0l diesel Freelander 'Year 2000, with 200000kms on the clock)?

Anyway, hope this might help stevieg76 to fix his problem, and not to get ripped off like I did.

Glad you got it sorted. :)

I know some garages charge a set amount for diagnostic work. If they do the job in 5 mins they gain money. If they take 5 hoursto do it, they charge the same but lose out. That could be what happened to you.

Sorry to hear that mate.

What do you mean by engine ceased? Do you mean locked up solid?

when i broke down on motorway the recovery guy said engine had ceased. So i got a 2nd opinion from garage in blackpool and they said the engine has ceased. He didnt tell us anything else. He said he wud av to check engine whether it was cracked block or gasket ????? So not sure if its locked up solid. I wud presume so ????
I got told again i cud get £1000 + as spare/ repair so gonna put it on ebay......prob start it at £600 on 3 day auction.

Do u know anyone who mite want one to fix ??? It is a diesel, looks good, got blacked out windows ??
