I'm following this string closely as it concerns the same problem that I posted a couple of weeks ago. I have a rendez-vous with LandRover to do the diagnostic but I can already guess that it will be "Ignition timing deviation". The intermittent motor warning light and power loss started happening following exchange of the glow-plugs. My local non-Land Rover garage had trouble replacing the plugs, especially #4 => requires removal of injector pump. (I should've told him to replace only plugs 1-3!). My 2.0l freelander has 200000kms on the clock, so my guess is that he either prompted weakness in the injector #1 needle sensor, or prompted weakness in the injector pump/timing solenoid. I'm thinking it's most likely to be the timing solenoid as I think there's less of a risk of damaging the injector #1 sensor.
Note : When I got the car back after replacement of the glow-plugs, each time I started the engine, there was a 5 or so second delay before the accelerator worked properly. So I took the car back in and they fixed that issue and the engine almost explodes into action even in sub-zero temperatures. However, after that visit, the engine warning light/power loss issue began. The warning light goes off above 120kmh in 5th gear (>3000 revs) and remains off. The warning light goes off if you take your foot off the accelerator rapidly. It remains on if you lift the accelerator very slowly.
Questions : could the timing deviation be due to the physical positioning of the injector pump on re-installation (mechanical issue), or is it a electronics/sensor issue?
Thanks for all the excellent information up till now. I'm learning fast. Appreciate it
