Hi, im currently half way through stripping my broke engine (brother drove to death, piston three ate head gasket) anyway i was told that all rover 220,420 and 620 sdi/sldi engines with an engine code starting 20T2N will fit as im only after the block and head etc and will be using the original box and ird. can anyone offer some advice please.

thanks in advance

that is correct! all the blocks and heads are the same, the only thing that varied on the l-series was the wiring and fuel pumps HTH

thank you for your reply. it really helped, I have just ordered an engine out of a rover 220/420 off ebay with a guarantee for £250 delivered, plus its a good excuse to buy some tools haha (new engine crane friday woop woop)

Quick update, The engine is out and I have replaced the clutch, injection belt, cam belt and idlers/tensioners also cleaned the sump out and found nothing nasty so pleased with new lump. just waiting for delivery of oil filter and trying to find a new ird to gearbox bracket if anyone has one let me know :)

Engine is in and working perfectly so far, now have a diesel pump spare and up for sale....

I see you've neglected to mention your asking price. Don't fall into the same trap as previous users have of thinking about overcharging the good folk who advised you. I've seen a few newbies fall at this hurdle.

Interesting thread this chaps.
Question for you ste220 if you wouldn't mind. Having had enough of the problems with my current freelander engine (2ltr XDi), I decided to do the same conversion as gday earlier in this thread. I thought all 2lr diesels as fitted to the Rover range i.e 220, 240 were the same as the freelander 2ltr.

Having taken the engine out and disposed of the car, I changed everthing needed over to the Freelander engine, the exhaust manifold, intercooler pipe, clutch etc. I then put said engine into the Freelander and tried to mate up the g/box (the original one already in the Freelander). It was then I found the gearbox wouldn't mate up. None of the bolt holes or the starter opening were the same.

I noted your comment about the blocks and heads being the same. I checked the engine code on the 'old' engine and it was as you said, 20T2N. Unfortunately on the new engine, their dosn't seem to be any number.

Any idea's? I'm told their 'may' be an adapter plate between engine and gearbox for this conversion but nobody seems to be able to say with any certainty that their is. At the moment I'm stuck.

Regards.

Stefan

steve parker land rovers are mentioned many times for special adaptor plates for different applications such as this, might be worth a call.

Hi, just the latest. I rang Steve Parker re the adapter plte. They no longer do these and dont know anyone who does. I had a look at the local breakers today. They had a rover 25 and a couple of 45's. I could see what appeared to be an adapter plate between engine & g/box,,£40 for them to remove, they wont let me.

Really getting stuck for time now with house move and the need to put my mo bike back together, so much so that I'm seriously thinking of scapping the freelander or some how disposing of it,,,not sure yet. At some stage I'll get my self a TD4.
