Hi, I'm looking to pick someones brains, specifically regarding a 3.5 V8 EFI (25Dxxxxxxx) engine.

I understand from the serial number that it was originally clamped to an auto box, I'm intending on mating it into a Series 2a box. Challenge being ... it don't have a flywheel.

Would I be right in presuming that any V8 flywheel of the period will fit, that I can then mount my adapter kit to? If not, what am I looking for?

There are several different part numbers shown on LRcat, but I don't know whether there are differences between them. Rimmers list ERR5575 for all classic RR though & some of the specialist after-market parts sellers ( V8tuner etc) don't show any variants so it MAY just be superseded part numbers.
The auto needs various extra spacers/adapters, the manual doesn't & goes straight onto the end of the crankshaft.
Think you'll also need the spigot bearing that goes in the rear of the crankshaft that the nose of the gearbox input shaft is supported by.

Mr Clutch in Huddersfield will knock you up a flywheel PDQ, although thinking about it he may need the ring for the starter motor. You'e not so far away so might be worth giving him a ring.

Can the 2a box handle the torque of 3.5 V8?

There's plenty of on web experience and opinions that say it can. It's not like I'm going to be hooning around like a 24 year old, and if it breaks I'll look at alternatives :D
I'm on refurbishing a 2a box I got for free anyways, so it's not exactly going to cost me anything to give it a go ;)
 
Just checked under the couch.... nope :D

If needs be, I'll get a different gear box or look at ways of making the one I have stronger whilst rebuilding it ;) The appeal of the 2a box is strong... no need to faff about with additional mounts, shortening/lengthening prop shafts, etc.
 
Aaaaaaand, doing some more reading... R380 mated to series Transfer case.... means no adapter required (saving cash) adding in 5 gears... and mounted akin to Defender.
Refurb the series box, sell the series box, buy the R380. Job's a good 'un :)

Once all the gubbins are sorted they'll be going on a new chassis anyways, so at least I can dictate which mounts are where at that point. Plenty to mull over :D

Some of the 4.0 P38s came with an R380 but I can never remember which one it is. Think it was the R380C or R380D. @jamesmartin will know.
