Hi. Chuffed to bits with the performance of my Disco on Tesco's finest (read: cheapest) vegetable oil at a 50:50 mix. Now want to get REAAALLLY stingy (and of course more eco-friendly) by burning used vegetable oil from the local chippy. Is anyone out there doing this? If so how are you filtering the oil? I'm hearing 5 microns is the target figure.....so is that one or two pairs of the wife's tights?

Need to let it settle about a month for the water oil and crap to seperate then filter over a few stages to some say 1 or some say 10 microns, I filter mouthwash with a 10micron filter before it goes it bottle so in my eyes 10 would be fine.

If ya do it in a clear container and put a tap about six inches from teh bottom you should just be able to get the veg oil

to filter it properly you'll have to spend a few quid on the kit - but before you do make sure you can actually get hold of WVO as people are now paying around 40p/l for it

Hmmm....assume WVO = Waste Vegetable Oil?.....Christ 40p / litre!!! Thought chippys would be giving the stuff away. Saw new stuff in Asda (thats pronounced "Azdurs" down here in Plymouth) for 44p back in the summer.
Incidentally, can someone tell me in laypersons terms what a 5 micron filter really is? Was only half joking regarding the wifes tights.

cheapest you'll find it is nearer to 70p/l now

you might still find someone who doesnt know that WVO has some value these days

Thanks for the ebay link. Guess I'll need some sort of pump to push the oil through the filter though.

Have an old Grunfos central heating pump that has clearly been sitting in my garage waiting for this moment. Move over Heath Robinson, its going to be an interesting weekand!

you'll find that'll get blocked quickly as they arent designed to deal with the lumps of "stuff" you'll find in WVO - if you've got a tall ceiling somewhere or a high roof shed/garage the gavity feed systems are the most cost effective where one tank feeds a lower one with increasing filtration

Point taken. Reckon the garage should be high enoughto set something up. Best I go and find some oil to put this into practise.
