Well my love affair with my new Defender 90 has received a bit of a setback. After having it for all of a week, and with it having done a total of 236 miles from being built, it broke down on me yesterday. Going down the motorway, engine warning light came on, power dipped and there was a whistling noise. Got off the motorway, called Landrover assist (who took nearly 2 hours to get to me - joy). Isolated the problem after a bit of searching - the fan had eaten through the plastic cowling on the side nearest the airbox and sliced through a boost hose. The Landrover assist guys thinks that on boost the hose must have pressed against the cowling and forced it into the fan. Managed to patch it up and get home, and it's now back with the dealer to be fixed. Has anyone else had this happen or have I been really really unlucky :(

Well I'm guessing then that no one else has had this problem.

I got mine back from my dealer today - on speaking with them, they said they had 2 others fail in the same way all within a week of each other. They replaced the hose, and put a bracket around it to stop it flexing towards the cowling for the fan.

Mine failed with less the 250 miles from new. So, worth checking for signs of rubbing/damage if you have recently got a new Defender.

If it's happened twice and you're the third why aren't LR asking the dealers to fit these brackets before the PDI

Thanks folks. I got the impression from talking with the dealer that they all failed within a couple of days of each other which isn't good. From what I can see they've now fited a bracket to keep the pipe from moving against the cowlng again, but I'll be keeping a close eye on it.

Not really what I had expected from a Defender :(

3 fails in one dealer and failing at such low mileage makes me wonder if they have changed the boost hose or maybe have fitted a bad batch at the factory.
Glad you're back up and running

Id be kicking off big time if id just paid all that money for it to break down!

Although its only doing what a defender does best ;)

Assuming it has come about from an assembly variation and not from a design revision it takes time for the dealer to claim back their labour / parts costs from LR and then their warranty analyst to spot the claim spike. Or a dealership has to raise it with the LR quality liason team.

3 repairs at one dealership will do nothing other than make that dealership more observant for that failure in the future.

Could just have been a new guy on the line missing off one clip. Not cost effective to put out any PDI alert......

this is what happens when you stick a ford transit engine in a defender
id love to buy a brand new one then fit it with either tdi or td5 :)

mind you saying that they are mentally overpriced and yes I have 2 defenders in case your wondering a tdi and a td5 :)

hi I have had the same problem if you can look at the hose you will find it wasn't the fan .the steering bar there is a nut under the hose which I think it is called the pinch nut rubbing the hard plastic cover around the inter cooler hose which when you turn left to right drags the hose into fan cover .I followed the hose from the front to back with my hand and found a hole in two places one like you did and one were the nut rubs the problem was recalled in Australia 2012 reading other forums why not in England .recall was to replace the hose with a new designed hose .land rover don't now about this problem so they say . I also have a scratch marks on the inside of my fan cover .if you can take the top cover of the fan look to the left where steering is you will see the nut hit or very close to the hose get someone to turn the steering a watch this nut hope this helps

The transit engine was a lash up fitment , too tall hence bulge in bonnet , the BMW M57 3 ltr tdi that I just fitted to my 110 is a better fit , the TD5 had clearance problems initially as well IIRC

may be land rover them self should log in to this site or others like this to get some idea what problems there are .mine did this in france which don't have found this problem due to the steering on the left .may be land rover should of realest the new defender in England first .cost to much to design this hose just for right hand drive .one hose fits all does it no

hi there if you have a defender 2.2 lt brand new you may not have been told there is a recall on the inter cooler hose by lister land rover .but Micheal Cotter social media executive told me he there is no such recall who do you be leave someone who sits behind a desk or the man on the shop floor

I despise the transit engine defenders , I like the dash but hate the engine and the lack of vents in the bulkhead !
shame they ended production with a melon really , personally I think the TDI and TD5 were the golden era , reliability and comfort ( although not both at once !)

I say that but my TDI is now a V8 but mainly due to the cost difference of a replacement tdi

The pinnacle was 110 (pre defender) and V8 CSW , speed . comfort and quiet (relative to diesels) only downside thirst !

personally I think a TD5 defender with a nice quiet v8 fitted would be ideal

apart from soundproofing im not sure whats different from that to my TDI defender ( or was) things such as the thicker steering wheel are there but the TD5 is so much more comfortable somehow , do they have different suspention? I know the seats are different

Defender was bodily inferior to the 110/90 as the panels were thinner ,I cant believe the amount of corrosion the more modern landrovers suffer from , thinner wiring , and so it goes on , they even dropped the boge hydramat on the station wagons which gave a huge range of load with comfort , instead they go along the road with the rear in the air . its a good job they are ending production before it dies of shame JMHO
