How free should a viscous cooling fan be when cold with the engine not running ? Should you be able to spin it ? or is there drag ?
Mine has a fair bit of drag , so much so that I honestly think that the fan runs the same speed as the water pump pulley wether engine hot or cold !, resulting in a 8 mile run before beginning to warm up , once up to temp everything is fine .
So to recap , I dont think my viscous fan is working as a viscous fan but as a constant engine speed fan , maybe someone can advise , thank you .

Hey Tonka man
Think u answered ur own question really - take a look at the fan when the engine is cold n rev it. U know wot it should do! Does it?

Mines a bit stiff on the 110 but you can turn it when cold, just.
The zoo zoo one is much more free when cold and you can visually see it spinning slower than engine speed.

should be nice and free when cold and you should feel resistance when hot. sounds like you need a new viscous coupling or an electric fan fitting.

I think it speeds up with revs when cold . I will get a good used replacement , unless when its off I can free it up a bit .
