Time for an update - turns out the block was cracked, which is probably responsible for my coolant usage. All breather pipes were full of mayonnaise as was the ladder frame so new block time. Got one from a well know engine rebuild company. Who were prompt and knowledgeable but also tried to convince me to send me all the ancillary parts and pay the charge for not having a usable replacement engine - thought that was a bit of a scam.
Well-known and beginning with a letter roughly in between s and u?

You've got it. They've done a great job with the new block (it cost enough so I'd hope so). But that sort of thing leaves a bit of a bad taste in the mouth. Either way I'm happy

They're only a half hour drive from me, so I nipped over to pick up a set of everything I'd need for my petrol engine (now in the closing stages like yours). I was given a mini guided tour of the workshop and met the family while we chatted about life, the universe and all thing Land Rover. Very friendly indeed.

But when I 'phoned a few weeks later to question that the pre-sized small end bushes that I'd bought needed massive reaming I got an extremely frosty reception and the implication was that I'd fitted them wrongly. I bought some size-it-yourself ones elsewhere, and now know that the originally supplied ones were about 40 thou wrong, so obviously a rogue set. I've also ended up making half a dozen gaskets up that were missing from the 'complete gasket set' too. I have the same taste in my mouth, great shame but I still send someone there who wanted the rebuild done for them because the incredibly high standard he sets for himself certainly exceed any that I've seen elsewhere.

I agree. I have a lot of respect for people who do any job to a high standard. I’d love to have looked around the factory.

Have I set the alternator and bracket up right? Seems to be the only way it goes on. There also a black earth on one of the securing bolts for the altonator, is this correct? Stupidly didn’t take a photo

Can't really tell off those pics on my phone but there should be a big casting that bolts to the side of the timing belt chest.
On disco 200 anyways.

Alternator tensioner bracket bolts here on the underside of the alternator on the Discovery 200Tdi, you can just see the slotted bar just above the alu intake pipe and blue silicone pipe connector.

Any idea where that black earth runs? I'm sure it was an engine to chassis earth
Not uncommon to fit additional earth straps, that isn't original so would assume fitted from the bloc to the engine mount on the chassis side?

Best way to tighten the bolts on the FIP pulley? Also have I got the plate the right way round. Think this is the only way it goes on but the remaining holes look misaligned with holes underneath if that makes any sense?
