just wondered what EGR you fitted and where did you get it, I am looking to fit one soon but some of the posts recommending particular ones are too old and the links have gone, been looking on the bay but still not sure which one to go for, anyone recommend one to me ?

If you're reading this thread wondering if you should fit the EGR blank or not, DO IT!

I fitted an Alisport EGR blank in February 2014. I've had no problems what-so-ever with it.

Make sure you actually clean out the inlet manifold when you fit the blank as it will be really dirty in there. I had a 5mm thick coating on all surfaces inside the inlet manifold!

There's no downsides to fitting this EGR blank. You'll increase engine response and MPG, just make sure you clean the gunk out of the rest of the system too or there's no point doing the mod.

By doing this and fitting a Ronbox, I was able to get my Freelander to return 41mpg on my B road commute!
 
PROBLEM SOLVED!

Apparently, the black connector which normally plugs directly into the fuel pressure sensor on the fuel rail is not used on this late model FL1. Instead it has a green connector which comes direct from the side of the ECU box. I read somewhere that it is an upgrade on later models. Therefore the black connector is not used, and just dangles there.

The problem I was having was because I'm a klutz :rolleyes:, and I had mistakenly forgotten to reconnect one of the sensors on the rubber hoses on the left that connect to the air box!

Once I plugged that back in, I was up and running!

I feel a significant improvement in performance at low revs since fitting the EGR bypass... but I'm not sure how much of that is because it was driving like a pig yesterday when I had that left sensor disconnected.

I think I feel a difference though. I just went and picked up an air/pollen/oil/turbo vent/crankcase breather/fuel filter and 10lts of 5/30 semiSynth, and plan on doing a full service tomorrow.

Let's see if I can improve on the 30mpg I'm getting after fitting the EGR bypass and the full service!

My 2002 pre-facelift has the same green and black connectors. I too remember reading about an extra loom to fix a problem with the fuel rail pressure sensor but can't find it right now. I fitted a RonBox to the green connector and all works well.

I also did the cheapy egr mod using a 22mm copper end-stop £3 from B&Q, clean the crud up and push in the end. Now all looks correct but no messy exhuast fumes. I do want to clean the whole inlet system (intercooler, hoses, inlet manifold) and understand that parafin is a good way to soak it all off as the official stuff from LR was Trich which is now banned.

Noob question. If there's still a bit of water inside the inlet manifold when fitted back in after cleaning. Will it ruin the engine or will it just dry out?

Personally I'd make sure it was properly dry.

Water doesn't compress so if you leave some water inside the inlet manifold you might 'hydraulic' your engine - which is bad ;)

Just did this yesterday.... was doing stuff to my SJ410 when the posty pop over with a package.... Stopped what i was doing and fitted it immediately; took about 4hrs max with the cleaning (that is the hard part) had a small heart attack when i thought i dropped something down the inlets! but thankfully i found the rubber bit on the floor, panic over...
Went for a drive - WOW! I have my car back, so happy, cheers guys...

I used 2 cans of Mr muscle today and jet washed. I let it dry in the sun and then used a hair dryer to get nice and dry. All done and very happy with the results. less smoke and better "pick up".
 
Fitted my stainless steel EGR bypass today along with a genuine BMW cyclone crankcase breather (needed the notch cutting).

Cleaned the manifold with Mr Muscle and pressure washer, MAP cleaned with switch/contact cleaner.

Can't believe how much better it is to drive. Pickup is so much better and pulls away much better from standstill.

Have to say it sounds quite different, perhaps a little noisier but would 100% recommended this to anyone debating the mod.

Also fitting full set of silicone turbo/intercooler hoses, just intake and "EGR" elbow so far.
 
Done my EGR mod at weekend along with intercooler hoses. What a transformation. No hesitation pulling out at junctions any more. Engine pulls cleanly upto 70mph - I'm sure it would do up to 90mph. Car has 132k miles and runs better now than it did with 60k miles on the clock. In side the EGR it appeared to be fairly gunked up but was covered in thick oily carbon. I don't think the EGR was working. Replacing hoses and EGR took 1hour - it is really easy! Now to see how it affects the mpg.

I'm dan a new owner who has posted once to say hi and then had totally forgot I had posted on here (a bust job, wife and 2-yr old twins sees to it I don't get much time for anything else).

Anyway, thinking a lot of the post-fitment reviews were nothing more than hyperbole, thought I'd better see first hand the difference blanking that pesky valve can make; after all some else mentioned on here it's a 2.0 diesel not a high-strung NA engine (that I'm used to) so was sceptical about the gains it'd give.

After fitting my EGR bypass off eBay this morning, I am very pleased with the results. No it won't set your pants on fire comparative to the gains the synergy boxes might afford (that'll be next after Christmas has shown its back to us) but for now this is a great wee mod for £25. My TD4 is on 105k now but I have to say feels like it's done half that, don't half wear well these cars, even the leather seats still feel greats (ours is an ex-demo ES Premium). Overall gains are low down engine responsiveness, far better pulling out of junctions etc but not convinced much more actual power. Still, very happy. An overtake is an actual possibility now rather than a pipe dream since my 135i got nicked a while back!

Jumped back on the landyzone search function not long ago as the car has started belching out a fair bit of white, diesel smelling smoke upon start up that soon clears, lumpy idle from cold for 10 secs then clears and also a slight misfire when holding revs at 2000-2500 rpm ish (very slight) so most fingers are pointing at an injector.

Got a few other bits coming this week to give her some love, new MAF, PCV (not cyclone upgrade just loo-roll repayment, new air filter, turbo atmospheric filter, and have also filled her up with some STP injector clearer and rad weld as I think there is a small rad leak somewhere. Thought this might have been a symptom of head gasket failure but no other symptoms are present so expecting rad weld to do the trick. We'll see...
 
Final note to say very impressed with the forum, very helpful chaps (assuming it's a hairy knuckle fest around here!) and by a mile amongst the most helpful and knowledgeable I have known...

Has anyone done the EGR bypass and had the freelander fail it's MOT because of it?
Was going to do it but someone put me off
 
Small update from me, I have taken my FL in to my local independent garage to get the misfire looked at and to diagnose the white/blue smoke on startup. Again fingers are pointing towards an injector, but also noticed my oil is MASSIVELY over filled (like over an inch above max on the dipstick) and so am now wondering if an injector seal has perished, thus leaking derv into the crankcase.

Also 99% sure thermostat is stuck open as this morning (0degrees) the needle barely moved off the bottom of the temp gauge and only mildly luke warm air came out after a good 5-6 miles of town and A-road driving.

Also noticed a small reduction in coolant over a period of weeks - inserted some radweld at weekend though am also wondering if the thermostat has gone kaput if the housing is leaking and this is the cause of this. Have done plenty of head gasket failure research and this doesn't seem the issue.

I know one or a combination of these are pretty common symptoms/issues (and wasn't sure where to post) so i'll post the garage's response to this and how hefty the bill will be, but an expecting a good £500 or so. Driving-wise, other than smoke and lumpy idle for 10-15 secs on startup the car drives perfectly, so am taking preventative measures now to save the turbo etc.
 
Finally fitted my EGR blank today. Has anyone else experienced one or two failed starts immediately after fitting? Beforehand, the car started on first turn of key, after fitting it only coughed into life on the third attempt and was even lumpier idling that usual for a few seconds. Then all was well, and drives great.
 
Just a quick update on the 22m end cap way of disabling EGR end cap now been in place for 30000 m no corrosión of end cap EGR and manifold only a light coating of oil residue cleaned in 10min in a parafin bath intake ports only needed a wipe out, all for the princley sum of 31p

Way to go, but be careful or you will be getting sued by the Ebayers who sell EGR blanking kits for bloody stupid money. EGR blanking can be done for a penny on a P38. Various sized coins are available for other engines. But just pulling the vac pipe off and blanking it works wonders. :D:D
