Finally got round to doing mine.

The egr itself didn't look as bad as other reports but the ports were totally gunned up!! Had to carefully scrape what I could out using a large flat head driver. There was a lot!

The difference low down is much improved. I also changed the oil and air filter at the same time but can certainly report that as far as I'm concerned it has been worth while.

I will be changing mine sometime this week on my new FL which I picked up Thursday Arctic2

Sorry ... PCV filter?

You may know it as the Crankcase emission control unit, it contains a small filter which needs changing around 36000, miles but I change mine at least once every year, if not twice, bit OTT but as the cost is minimal why not.

I have today prepared the manifold, egr and MAP sensor along with the PCV filter ready to swap over one of the days this week I will take photo's of the process and post on a different thread cheers Arctic2

I will also be adding brass unions to my fuel line instead of the flimsy plastic ones

Something I always do on a diesel I did this on my R75

How about fitting the BMW (cyclone) crankcase breather?

The loo roll one you have fitted should be changed every 12,000 miles, so every service. LR changed the schedule.

I agree some people prefer the cyclone I my self have always liked the filter one, below is a link to the so called fit and forget breather, but as we know this is not the case it still needs to be cleaned sometime.

Being the first dry weekend since I got the parts, I swapped the EGR valve and PCV filter today, with a bit of assistance from both here and Nik Rivers' handy site...

Quite pleased that it only took me around 3 hours including cleanup afterwards, considering I haven't weilded a socket set in anger in a good few years! :D

I looked into removing the manifold for cleaning, but it'll need to wait until another time. Felt a bit gunky inside though...

UPDATE: Fuel economy has improved from 34 to 37 mpg, engine is more free revving and pulls better from low down. Great mod!

Got a egr bypass off ebay and fitted at the weekend. This was the state of the egr. Car has 140k on the clock and seemed fine just a little sluggish. I also cleaned the inlet manifold, its not spotless but a lot better!

Its not a rocket ship but the improvement in pick up is noticeable and also the engine seems more relaxed holding speed. Trying to cruise at 75 seemed to be a struggle now its easy and acceleration much prompter if that makes any sense!

Crankcase breather next, probably the bmw part so I can mostly forget it and just give it a clean every so often.

Taken egr off today, full of crud so given that a good clean, manifold, again full of crud so that's getting a good clean. The ports, as expected, full of crud too, gonna clean up as best I can, how careful do I need to be that crap doesn't go down them and what would happen if it did?

I knew it was gonna be a messy job, not this bad though!!! At least I know it needed it!!

Would be careful to not let to much carbon drop in the engine , It is possible to lock the engine up on the valves !

Cheers, scraped what I could out, they're still pretty ****ty though, quite oily rather than just dried carbon deposits.

Anyway, it's all back together again now, last few bits went on with the aid of a headtorch, never good, at least all the tools are accounted for and no left over bolts/screws/parts, so that a bonus. Blanked off the egr when putting back together with a 22mm stop end (read about doing that way on here somewhere) and it starts and runs with no eml on. Will test drive it I the morning!

Does anyone know the size of the bolts that fix egr to manifold? Someone had obviously taken it off before and only replaced 3 of them and I forgot to check before rushing to refit it all.

Crankcase breather filter next!!

Don't all go mad at me but I prefer to keep the EGR as it should be and change it once a year, I also like to change the inlet manifold with a clean one at the same time, along with cleaning the MAP sensor.

You can see from the photo's what sort of condition the inlet manifold EGR and MAP sensor can get it in if left for years or 25000 miles etc.

PCV should also be changed in my opinion once a year for the cost of £7 it is a no brainer. cheers Arctic2

You what!!! Only joking, it's a fair point. After I took mine off and seeing the state of it, I cleaned it as best I could and blanked it off (cost was only 99p) and put it all back on but I was thinking myself that if I had a spare manifold and egr valve then I could take more time to clean them properly and just swap them over annually as you do.

I gotta say, mine drives so much better after a clean/blanked off though, really noticeable difference, don't have to dive on the clutch during slow speed manoeuvres to avoid it stalling anymore!!

hello guys,

Tried fitting my EGR bypass today but the arm that blanks off the exhaust gases is too long by about 3 or 4mm, just can't get it to fit as there isn't any "give" in the pipe that it clamps to (if you know what I mean). Anyone come across this before?

cheers

Hi there, I have introduced myself previously, and as most newbies on here, I can manage generally navigating a simple fault:lalala:, and succesfuly carrying it out. However now I'm lost, I have blanked my egr, just after the cooler, and before the flexi pipe to egr, at the conjugal clamp.... via the method of flattened out beer bottle top, Becks I pressume:(. anyways fella's, this was fine and has permanently blocked exhaust gasses to egr. but my Td4 now sounds like a vw camper, the gasses have blown through, somewhere underneath the air filter, and can't find any literature whatsoever, on the complete egr system to locate piont of the new leak, but its, smoking and loud under there. any help would be really appreciated, as I'm t:(oo confident at taking things on, and now I feel like a c-v Tool again:baby: cheers

Hi, Just a bit more, after having a look today. I really need Ninja td4 warriors help here. The exhaust gasses are spewing out into engine area, I thought it might be from exhaust manifold, to egr cooler bit. but Im baffled. The turbo needs replacing I know, but exhaust gasses have suddenly started escaping from some where around the turbine housing to manifold gasket, to nr the crankshaft pulley area as best as I can see, and sounds like a vw camper amplified, Its started limp home mode, ive done pcv to cyclone. smokes like mad but not if your driving, Is it at all possible blanking my egr with coin type method, has built up pressure and blown some other type of exhaust seal.. theres as much exhaust smoke coming from back and under engine, as out of exhaust its greyish black smoke that makes you feel real strange when trying to find source of leak, I felt like I had some of Jamaica's finest.... pls help guys I'm lost here:D help

That will in time burn a hole through it ( and were do the bits go ) ?
Better to block of the vacuum hose to disable the egr !

Hi , thanks for the reply, seriously!:p Yep I also disabled egr, and cleaned it, stuck solid thought, the right way, if it burns through it should be exactly as it was, stumped at the egr. I just heard somewhere that blanking the egr can cause the egr cooler to crack, I'm certain thats not whats happened to mine, as Ive sprayed everywhere I can with fairy bublicious, no leaks, but exhaust gasses are spewing out now nr the turbo. and sounds really loud like I got a big hole in exhaust but I have'nt. Is it at all possible, that blanking my egr has caused a gasket to blow on the manifold to egr, turbo?, which is leaking on compressor side badly? or somewhere else, It looks like it could be crankshaft or something as well, its just so hard to see. any Help muchly appreciated....:tea:
