Using a stub to keep the pipe sealed and tidy is fine orson, the post was aimed at rouselane who was asking what happens if a connection is made between vac pipe and inlet. There would only be a small positive pressure in there as egr solenoid would shut as boost rises but under cruise conditions there is enough to cause a flow of oil laden air through the vacuum system. :)

What would the oil do to the vacuum system?

Well it has the potential to rot seals and rubber pipework but I'm not aware of anyone with the problem. common sense should be enough to tell anyone that a vacuum system should not be open to a free supply of air....

Hi Chaser

Thanks for your reply. My Vac pipe is sealed !, BUT the issue is that the EGR Bypass being sold on Ebay does have a hollow stub and the sellers instructions clearly state that you should connect your vac pipe to this hollow stub. I know this becuase I bought one, realised this was wrong and returned it and bought the other (black) one which has a solid stub.

This point being that all the people that bought the Stainless Steel one may well have connected their vac pipe to the holow stub per the instructions and be unaware that they may have some big problems in the future.

I must admit though I do now get a faint spin down noise for about 5 seconds after the engine is switched off, but its not that intrusive and easy to live with (no where near as noisy as the ones posted earlier in this thread). May do the mod that has been suggested to eliminate this noise.

Thanks again
ed

hi peeps

I had the same problem, I bought the stainless one of flea buy, paid and it finally came. Im not an expert on engines as im an in the IT industry, how ever after noticing the black one on ebay with two little bits on the the side I emailed the seller and asked if I put the vac hose on the one and only tube on my stainless one. He replied a simple yes, and said yes 4 more times after me emailing and explaining 4 differnet ways. Even tho it said in instructions that came with the mod to put a screw in the vac tube and hide it away. Which as it is a car part I didnt think was a very good or professional way of doing it. I also asked if I follow the instructions should the little tube not be capped off? Anyway by this time I was well confused so i sent it back and asked for a refund, to cut a even longer story short he did not refind me or pick the item up from his sorting office. Which suited me down to the ground as he would not even email me back regarding my refund. So back to today, after returning it at the start of January it has finally made its way back to me after ending up in belfast at the lost items section of the post office.

So.........im getting the till tube welded close. Problem solved. Oh and dont buy the stainless ones lol. complete pain in the ass.

Hello, does this mod apply to the gas Freelanders? My 02 2.5 gas model has had the power loss problem coming out of corners while accelerating, oil smell in the cabin, and oil dripping from the intake manifold down the back side of the engine. I have replaced the valve cover gasket but still have oil leaking and now believe it is the intake manifold (removed it and found a lot of oil inside of it, no pipes leading to it are oily, where does it come from?). Thanks for any info aye, Tom

Oh and dont buy the stainless ones lol. complete pain in the ass.

I brought the old type EGR valve from this seller of the new s/s EGR bypass kits , It was a bad fit & the exhaust part did not line up so never fitted it

This is the one to avoid -
Landrover Freelander EGR TD4 Bypass kit Stainless Ste on eBay (end time 09-Apr-10 14:19:08 BST)

This is the one to buy -
Landrover Freelander Diesel EGR Bypass Valve on eBay (end time 04-Apr-10 21:29:17 BST) :)

But look how many of the Stainless Units he is selling from his feedback !!. There must be loads of people who have connected their vac pipe to the hollow stub on these units in error.

And if, thanks to such an idiot, all these people run in trouble due to the open vacuumtube connected straight to the airinlet, the Freelander has another type of "very bad car, to be avoided under all circumstances" label pinned up for the Td4, this in follow-up of the 1.8 petrol reputation.

oh well finally fitted my egr bypass thing yesterday and behold....it was a success. It took me ages to clean the inlet manifold, used a bottle washer, oven cleaner and parrifin. Would have taken less time except the bottle washer handle come off with the rest in the inlet manifold. So using plyers took some time to get the bugger out . Anyway all done now and it does seem better. Like I said before I got the stainless one off ebuy, so i put a bolt in the unsealed hole and welded it.

Next thing.......get me seals for injector leak off pipes and some new pipe to stop my diesal leak :D

Any idea which one to go for please? The black one possibly looks better?

1) Black: £48 .50 inc delivery.

New generation 2 Landrover Freelander EGR bypass valve to fit the TD4 Landrover. This valve has been redesigned and improved over the old design and any other cheap imitation designs that are currently circulating on ebay. The new design of EGR bypass now utilizes a high quality CNC machined body which incorporates a deep grooved lip to ensure that the turbo pipe cannot slip off the EGR bypass. Also the new CNC machined body has a larger internal diameter compared to the OEM EGR valve to ensure that maximum airflow passes through thus boosting performance, economy and reducing emissions. This new design is a marked improvement over the old design which was originally developed in conjunction with Tuning-diesels for cheaper diesel tuning. Even with the old design the improvements that the bypass offered the engine were very noticeable. Testaments and information on this EGR bypass can be found on the above website. So far I have shipped over 700 EGR bypasses all over the world for this particular engine. Along with this the EGR bypass now comes with a Turbo Boost gauge mounting pipe to allow easy installation of a Turbo Boost Gauge (pipe is shown in the pictures sealed with a blue vinyl cap). By mounting a Turbo boost gauge to your car you are able to monitor the boost levels to ensure that maximum performance and efficiency is achieved at all times. A secondary feature is also a mounting pin for the redundant vacuum pipe that is disconnected from the original EGR Valve. The EGR bypass has been manufactured using 8mm thick laser cut flanges (unlike other cheap versions on ebay that come with a 4mm flange that easily distorts and does not seal properly) and all the sub assembly components have been assembled using jigs to ensure accuracy and consistency every time. This product has been MIG welded by a time served coded welding engineer. Each EGR valve is professionally fully POWDER COATED in gloss black to ensure that an excellent aesthetic appearance is achieved along with maximum corrosion protection thus ensuring that the product enjoys . Other cheap EGR bypasses on ebay are poorly wet sprayed and have exposed parts of the component that will corrode within days of fitting.

2) Stainless Steel: £42.50 inc delivery.

The EGR bypass has been manufactured using 8 mm thick laser cut flanges and all the sub assembly components have been assembled using jigs to ensure accuracy and consistency every time. This product has been TIG welded by a time served welding engineer. This replaces the existing EGR assembly and in return it offers the following improvements over the standard EGR system. There are some POOR BLACK PAINT EGR BYPASES (will corrode within days of fitting )only kits available but these are not ideal, the actual EGR valve is a restriction to air flow and is best removed completely..[/I]

best bet look back a few pages.....the best one is the black one as it has a place to put the little hose on which is sealed. I got the stainless one which with a bolt in the little outlet and sealed up does the job just as good.:D

Thanks for the answer! I honestly did read the first 15 pages, but then addmitedly skipped to p18. Black one it is then. :)

Hi I got one of the black EGR Bypass valves and finally got round to fitting today, it has made a big difference with the engine response at low revs and pulling away.

I did have the dying duck noise so I blanked off the vacume pipe where it T's off to go to the EGR solaniod and its all ok now. :)
