Hi All - Have I found the first self fixing Freelander??
2000 miles ago I did the blank the EGR with a bean tin disc mod and cleaned the EGR valve.
Have now bought the proper EGR bypass kit and fitted it today. :)

When I dismantled the EGR I found the TD4 seems to have not liked the bean tin blanking mod and has perforated the centre of the plate to let the exhaust gas thro' again
How did the exhaust gas manage to get past the bean tin, it was a steel one?
If anyone else has done this mod check the quality of the bean tin you used as the engine seems to have found a way around this mod ;);)

TD John

That's probably why I read on different occasions that people cut a piece of a stainless steel plate of a certain thickness (2-3 mm) to block the gasflow towards the EGR .....

Hi, Can anyone help me, i'm wanting to take my diff off and make my freelander 2 wheel drive to say on fual through the summer and need the blanking plates , Does anyone know where can i get some from??

not sure, but this thread is about blanking off the EGR valve on the td4 engine, and totally unrelated to blanking off the diff. Try starting another thread, oh my mistake you did.

i dont know the answer to that wun ,my mot int till march so i kept the old unit un it dont take long to swap. . . .:)

And is the mot passed by now ?? Understand from other posts that there should be no problem whatsoever for the mot regarding this mod??
(Thinking (at least while trying to fall asleep at night) to clean up, one of these days, my maf, egr and possibly the inlet manifold, that is if I find the guts to start undoing that sh.. thing. As for my fbh mod it takes a while before I can convince myself to start doing things like this. Have always very sweaty hands when I start doing that but very proud when done and even "very-er" when things even work afterwards.....:D:D:D:D)

Thanks for the heads up. I've removed mine, I dread to think what might happen if it were drawn into the engine!
I've now removed the vac supply to the solenoid instead, (rather than from the EGR actuator) just waiting now to see if that spindown noise that Willo posted will return with it like this.

Nothing changed on mine so far and, holding wood, not heard that spindown noise anymore since last year ??

REET SO GO BUY ONE FIRST. . . .Strip off these bits[1]
jpg.gif
ok take off old egr[four bolts] undo the turbo electrical plug lhs [push metal plunger in and push down to realease] undo rhs electrical grommet with cables ,undo all manifold bolts and pull off ,should end up here [2]
jpg.gif
using Slobs idea use oven cleaner to clean plastic manifold ,wash out with water, i did it three times [3]
jpg.gif
sorry bout young Porky. . . . .take off all the seals and check um/and clean ,smeer with anti sieze and when dry put mani fold back ,if your not confident on motors use the correct tourque remember this is plastic to ally[4]
jpg.gif
fit new egr blanking plate, I found it tight and had to put screw driver in the holes to line it [smeer wiff anti seize on mate faces][5]
jpg.gif
put every thing back and double check. . . .put a screw or ball bearing in egr vacuum hose and cable tie it in a safe place [so it wont flap in the fan houseing] last check start motor [mine went first time] then test run . . . . .job done ,refere to heinz manwell un rave fer details. . . . .i wood like to thank Porky fer his tecknickle help un no how . . . . .well he did the whole job really i wez int pub :) :) :)

Stupid question for most of you I think but one thing puzzles me on picture #2. The round ports next to the injectors are for the cool airinlet to give the mixture to explode, ok, but what are the 4 square ports below for ???

Would a 10p piece here do the same job? Are they about the same size?

EGR bypass mod fitted to mine (2006) and passed the MOT on 19th of March with no hassle :)

By cleaning my maf, airfilter, engine breather filter and egr-valve today I probably found the answer on my above question. Followed the airflow from start to finish and I think the square ports below let the input air out of the engineblock into the manifold from where it goes on top of the manifold out of the round ports into the combustion chambers.
Sorry did not take picture of my engine breather filter but have taken picture of all the rest, including the cleaned egr-valve. (First I was thinking to also clean the manifold but as my egr-valve was only slightly dirty and a mild cleaning was enough (my egr-valve disabled since 6-7 yrs now) so I thought not worth the trouble and left it as it is.

Hi Guys, I Hav bin reading with interest the EGR blanking moddy, i am about to do the same fit to mine and looking at the item on Fleabay it looks fairly simple to fabricate ( i am a coded welder and have a lathe etc...) A question I have is: Is the valve an actual valve, and what is inside the large dia pipe is there escape or vent holes of any kind? I can see the smaller tube is cap blanked closed. Any Info welcome good Sirs of the steed.

Hi Amo,
Got one off fleabay for mine - this is how it was fitted/made.
Original ally EGR valve unit comes out complete leaving square mating surface into inlet manifold (plastic) wiv four fixing holes. Small metal pipe from exhaust wiv jubilee clamp that was attached to EGR valve and a short 90' rubber turbo hose. Oh! and the small vacuum pipe to operate the valve wot ain't there no more.
Bypass unit is a plain length of steel tube that joins the turbo hose (this sets the o/s diameter) to the manifold, it has a sqaure (5mm) flange welded on one end wiv four holes to bolt onto inlet manifold (use the valve as a pattern and you'll need a gasket of some kind).
About half way along it has a solid steel rod (8mm) welded to the outside of the tube wiv a 4mm thick steel blanking disc on the end for the small exhaust pipe (made up so as not to strain the exhaust pipe to fix it on!).
Some people have had ones off fleabay that had this rod/blaking disc at the wrong angle/too short and fings broke weeks later !!
Remember to plug the redundant vacuum pipe and tie it back.
Hope this gives you enough info to have a go at fabricating your own.

Thanks TDJohn for the info, i will try to make this outta staino and put a flexy stainless pipe to the blanking plate. Thanks again.:) Alan

It'd be easier to forget the branch and remove the small exhaust pipe where it connects under the air filter and fab and fit a blank flange. ;)
