Help! Did my egr yesterday. (New shiny stainless steel number) now sounds like a tractor and stinks of exhaust! I think there should be a gasket between the exhaust port and the stump from the egr bypass? The clamp doesn't seem to marry them up completely?
Do I just make a gasket and blather it in gun gum or similar? Wrap in exhaust tape? Help?
 
No gasket as clamp should be good enough. You could try exhaust paste if slightly out of line, but it could be a faulty bypass if the stub does not line up correctly. Had no problem with mine and it was a £30 eBay wonder.
 
Possibly it's that strange clamp that is not seating correctly.

I would slacken it off and fit it again.

I didn't have any bother - or need for any gasket either.

I have the stainless steel one too.

Thanks for the replies. I dismantled everything tonight after stopping off and buying some 'gun gum' on the way home. (Last used to get a vauxhall viva through an mot about 20 years ago! ) the weird jubilee clip/clamp had crimped the exhaust port under the egr post. (Leaving a 3-4mm gap) I undid it all, straightened the exhaust port, used gun gum to make a bit of a gasket, put the two together and filled the join with more gun gum. Put the clamp back on and applied a bit more gun gum around the back of the clamp. Started car, no tractor noise, no smell! Sorted.
Silicone hoses have arrived....they look too small. ? I'll update tomorrow!
 
Finished mine now. 'Rain stopped play' yesterday!

I did the turbo filter, the crankcase breather filter mod and the egr blank mod.

I have not taken it for a road test yet, but it did start straight away and I left it idle for a while.

I did accelerate a few times and found that it was very lumpy?

Is this to be expected initially?

I am thinking yes, because the fuel pipes were removed to get at the oil separator.

I will wait for an informed answer before I take it out for a run.

I also assume the vacuum pipe that went onto the old egr still goes on the dummy pipe on the mod?

Sounds like the job is good to go. ;)

You're right about the little vacuum pipe too.

However you need to do a search on here for duck noise

No joking - its an annoying noise which originates from the vacuum collapsing at the EGR solenoid which is no longer in use.

Some folks get it - some don't.

Not a problem - an easy fix.

Not sure that I have the dreaded 'duck noise'.

I just noticed that the engine was lumpy, I could feel it.

There was a very short lived squeal for several very short moment (seconds) but whatever it was has not reappeared.

Can you describe the 'duck noise'?

Don't worry about it - it's not at all serious.

Some folks either can't hear it or don't care.

I was not aware of it until it was brought to my attention, and then it bothered me. Very obvious with a window open when I switched off.

It only comes when you switch off the engine and has been variously described as 'Donald Duck' or the 'Farting Freelander'. :frown:

Read this thread, some way down the road there is a youtube clip you can listen to. Good luck. Btw, hard of hearing myself, only heard it when the hood was open and was only noticed when engine switched off.
 
I have looked hard for a youtube clip of the dreaded duck noise, but can only find references to it and no actual link.
