Hi chaps ! I was on here a few moons ago asking about a P38 I've got as a project car. My problem is I've not got past the second of a few problems on this, the EAS.
Basically I just cant seem to communicate with the EAS. I've tried all sorts. I even dual booted a laptop with XP, loaded on the Serial driver as the only driver on it and still I have the same problem, junk comms. The switch on the dash shows all 4 lights on so somethings happening but all I get is a constant stream of 20s / 50s
So its still flat on its bumps and I'm getting nowhere. The engine has now decided to dump its coolant contents after a few minutes of running so thermostat must be goosed now as well, not an issue but thats on top of the previous owner telling me it lost water from coolant system anyway so there is an underlying issue to fix there.
Its not a bad old bus, decent enough nick, 105k ish, usual electrical gremlins, ABS, air bag, suspension, door locks, etc....

Need a boost here, Can anyone suggest why I can't talk to EAS unit ? This will at least get me started as to why suspension is on bump stops, then move on from there...
I'm loosing interest (I know I know!!) so if its one battle after another with dodgy Lucus systems I might just flog it for spares.

Have you read the instructions? Have you got the ignition on when you try to communicate? Is the battery voltage good? Are you using a USB to serial adaptor? If so, did you load the driver BEFORE you plugged it in? If you did plug the adaptor in before loading the driver, Win will have loaded a generic driver and it will not work, you also need to know the adapter is a full RS232 implementation, many are not. Finally check the OBD connector for corrosion front and back, check the timer relay is in place.
Until you get the green "Good Idle" button you have no comms.

Yes to all of that. Your right I'm using a USB adaptor so thats why I used a clean XP install, used the FTDI driver, even used an FTDI serial / USB circuit board converter which shows Green comms, so in theory I'm communicating but just getting garbage. Checked corrosion at OBD and at ECU so thats why I'm at a loss.

Timer relay ??? That's not something I've looked at ! Where is it and what is it ?:confused:

Ah ok. As I'm told everything was ok till this thing was parked up for 4 months I'll assume its still there. The owner wouldn't know what it was for if it poked him in the eye !
However are they prone to failure ?? maybe I've been looking under the wrong stone ??

Getting comms with a USB adaptor can be a right ball ache. I have an ACER with USB, have never had good comms with that, but my old steam driven Dell with serial port gets comms first time, every time. The USB driver is usually the problem. Do you not know anyone close with a Nanocom?
 
i had some issues with my laptop when connecting up, my normal windows 7 machine would connect up just fine, I bought a toughbook as I wanted to start using that in the workshop rather than risk me normal pooter, the program said it was working fine but could i buggery get it to work, plugged in the normal pooter and it worked fine. Baffled.

Could be something similar?

Despite the fact I bought a USB adaptor cable from Rangerover specialist that was supposed to be first class I took on board these comments a while ago. I bought a FTDI manufactured external board with FTDI chipset so there would be no need for a driver.
As for Nanocom, forgive my ignorance but what's that ?

nanocoms a standalone box of tricks for diagnostics. does the same job as the eas software plus more. but pricey!
 
Having just bought a p38 myself, again with its issues with the EAS, i can honestly say its worth it. I had a few issues getting it to work but I guess the reality is its all fixable. This is of the generation of vehicles that you can still mend without having to program a pc.

Itll be something daft :)

after all the hassle, I can honestly say it was eminently worth it, I now adore my P38 despite it now costing me £60 a day to get to work. :rofl:
 
Just received this item off ebay today. Came with all instructions and was a doddle to set up. It connected straight away and comms was instant. It reset my EAS faults instantly. I'm using a Dell Inspiron, I'm in Liverpool if that's any good. Range Rover P38 EAS USB Suspension Diagnostic Cable Tool

thats what the OP already has I believe YS

It is that he cannot get the unit to connect up properly,which others have already gone through.

I bought an identical product from a rangy specialist, that was the starting point to all this grief ! LOL

I think I may do a Video of my connection to the P38....worth a shot

(Works well on mine and now I have said that and said I'll do a video it's at this point it doesn't work!!!)
